I love the BMW Z4 M Roadster. It's my favorite modern BMW. I like convertibles, and in my humble and completely biased opinion, the Z4 M Roadster is the best modern BMW convertible. It's the best-looking Z4 version, has all of the best bits from the E46 M3, and all of the aftermarket support that entails.
I did a quick search on Auto Trader for Z4 M Roadsters with 60k or fewer miles on them. Other than the particularly low-mileage examples that approach $30k, most are in the $20-25k range. All under 60k miles on them.
My lease on my 135is ends on June 30, 2016. Once I turn it in, I'm planning to stick to 1 car for a while and just drive my Grand Cherokee, at least until spring of 2017. At which point, I will have to try very hard not to buy a Z4 M Roadster, and likely fail.
I doubt the prices will go up by much if at all by then. They'll probably be cheaper. The Z4 M Coupe holds its value well. The Roadster, not so much. It doesn't have quite the right combination of hardcore-hardtop attitude of the Z3 and Z4 M Coupes, and it's not rare enough like the S54-equipped Z3 M Roadster, which I'd argue is worse to drive than the also-S54-equipped Z4 M Roadster.
I'm also fairly confident that it won't be too hard to find a low-mileage example in a couple years. While some people DD them, just as many people buy roadsters as toys, so you find suitably low mileage ones even as they approach 10 years old.
So I'll buy one, and slowly add upgrades to it, like suspension bits, and brake bits, and exhaust bits, and if I'm particularly stupid, a supercharger kit. Because...
I should probably put all this money towards something more prudent, but fuck it. I'm a car guy.

I would consider a Z4 Coupe, or Z4 M-Coupe...
But frankly, out-of-warranty BMW maintenance expenses, even on a naturally-aspirated I6, manual-gearbox, RWD car, scares me.
The cost on maintaining a modern BMW motorcycle might be too high, let alone a car.
The first Z4 generation is relatively simple compared to newer turbocharged, automated-gearbox, AWD BMWs... and probably STILL expensive to maintain or repair out of warranty.

You're probably right in that it's probably expensive to maintain.
It'd be helped somewhat by the low mileage in spite of age, and the fact that it wouldn't be my only car. If it did need repairs, I wouldn't be in as huge of a rush to fix stuff in order to keep it on the road. If cash is a little tight when a repair needs to happen, I could always drive my other car while saving up for a little while.

I totally want a Z4 M Coupe, I want a Z4 M Roadster. It's cheaper and I like ragtops.

My M3 hasn't been terrible yet, my biggest expense so far was new tires. If you are even slightly mechanically inclined you can do most of the stuff yourself. Like I'm doing my own spark plugs, brakes, filters, and belts but there are guys who do their own valve adjustments, bushings, etc. If you can do work yourself and have a good indy nearby maintenance is totally reasonable.

My boss has a track-prepped, supercharged Z4 M roadster. It's fantastic.

Just noticed I had a typo in that post and it's outside the edit window. Should've been,
I don't want a Z4 M Coupe, I want a Z4 M Roadster. It's cheaper and I like ragtops.
But it looks like you got what I meant anyway. ;)

DO IT. I am sure you will be able to find a low-mileage, well maintained example in a few years. Ragtops are often used as second cars and don't usually go through the mileage, wear and tear of normal hardtop models.
Side note: I was at an Auto-X last year at Met Life and there was a black Z4M that ripped through the course. The sound it made can only be described as pornographic as it echoed off the stadium.

"After the refresh" You talking first gen Z4, or the current flippy hardtop Z4?

The one that came out in 2009 or so. I'm guessing that's the current gen

Yeah that's the flippy hardtop one. It's ok but I'm not as much of a fan since it's more of a cruiser and less of a sports car. The current Z4 wants to compete against the Mercedes SLK. The old Z4 M was like "let's go pick a fight with a Boxster S."

Yeah :)
Tbh, you might want to consider like an 2008 M3 if you're looking at spending around$35k...

I want a convertible, and I've driven an E92 M3 convertible. It's a really nice handling boat. Also not looking to spend $35k. I figure in a couple years from now I'll be able to find a Z4 M Roadster with low miles for well under $25k.

I have an S54 Z3M the car is easy to work, rarely needs work, and due to decades of part sharing parts can be obtained for low prices
