Am I the last person in the car world that doesn't like the "patina" look? With few exceptions, it sucks. I mean, it doesn't have to be candy apple red, but for god's sake, show a little more effort in the bodywork department!

I like it on trucks. That's about it to be honest...

Wait until you see the 7s on the back of my bug in a few months.

No, I haven't. It's just a matter of opinion, I know. I just think I'm over it.

It's only original once. It can go too far though, as with patina that's faked.

It kind of makes sense there. It's usually earned on a truck. Other cars almost seems to be a result of neglect.

Exactly why I like it on trucks and not cars.

I won't be offended if you don't like it but I would be interested in hearing your opinion. It's a 1961 that was bought new by the town of Andover, Mass and used by them for 9 years. After that it was sold to a farmer who used it as a far tractor and stacked wood directly on the roof (as you can see above from the dents). Third owner pulled the body off and the floorpan/engine is basically brand new. It's cleaner underneath than an Accord made last year. The blue paint is a color they only used for like 4 months. I just can't imagine fixing the dents and painting it in new paint and destroying all that history, myself.
I can understand not liking patina but I think a lot of times it's a case by case basis. Most people I know like patina, so I'd be interested in hearing what someone who doesn't like it has to say about my car. Like I said I won't be offended and I won't even send a wrench past your head.

I had to take a second look to wonder why the heck there was a radiator mounted sideways, and then I realized it wasn't.

Honestly, with the hood like that, I kind of like it. It shows the nature of the classic bug scene "it a work in progress" If you read it again, what I said isn't a blanket statement, it's just i see so many great mechanical innovations and marvels done with the engines, but the bodies look like you could poke a hole through them with your finger. THAT drives me nuts. Articles on how to create the effect using acid make me cringe. You know some guy somewhere is going to do it to ruin a perfectly good, probably near impossible to find car just to achieve that.....ArrrgH!
And I am aware that the patina/ratrod thing has it's place, but we all know that it is a reaction by regular guys to take back the hobby from the high dollar builders/collectors with their mirror finish paint jobs and chrome plate all the things mentality. I get that, I just think that there should be a middle ground. yours actually seems to be closer to anything else that I've seen to finding that.

This is my other one and it's a little too clean for me, even though the clear coat is peeling off. I would never acid a car, but for the '61 it's one of those things where I like to preserve the story of it by preserving the look. Thanks for actually taking the time to respond, instead of just saying "Yeah, looks good."

See, that one I like better, except for the pipe. I've never understood the desire to get rainwater in the engine...that's another story. Otherwise, that bug would work pretty well for me. I might raise the frint end a little, but otherwise, notbadobama.jpg. I remember you were wanting to sell one a while back. Whatever happened with that?

I sold a Fastback about a month ago. The pipe I only did because I only know of about 3 or 4 cars that have that with an apron and full fenders, i.e. not a Baja cut.

Here is something that I saw earlier that hits a happy medium. It is an old school hotrod built back in the 50's. I think you'll like it. If calzone sees it, I think he'll lose his mind. http://imgur.com/a/F51En

you are not the last one.
I wholly agree. If it is not a singularly important, stone-original, barn-find, museum-piece car that should be left UNTOUCHED for some big historical provenance reason...
if it is not that, and the finish has failed, then it NEEDS A NEW FINISH, even if it restores the original look... it should at least be a *finished finish!*
Clear-coating over a failed finish, is not a new finish, it is just wasted work to stabilize a failed finish, that should have been restored, or resto-modded.
A restoration doesn't just leave bad and failing paint alone, for a reason.

Yeah that's perfect. I have a hotrod all built in my head, it's just getting it to the metal that will take until I'm 45.

I hate it. especially when a fiberglass car does it.
