Mechanical or digital odometers?

Which do you prefer? Personally, I'm more a fan of the digital style. Multiple trip readouts on most newer vehicles, more space for mileage, and they just look better IMO. Yeah, being electronic, they may be more prone to failure, but I still prefer the way they look. What's Oppo's consensus?

Analog or a digital representation of analog. My experience with purely digital is that the numbers never seem to keep up under acceleration (e.g. 45-48-54-59 rather than the smooth movement of a needle) and that you lose your reference point to whether it's rising or falling. And then there's the feeling of watching the tach, speedo and oil pressure needles swing right and the gas swing left :)

I hear ya. I've had a good mix of both kinds. My Explorer, first Infiniti, Taurus, and Mazda were all mechanical. My second Infiniti, Durango, both my Oldsmobiles, and my Cavalier were all digital, though the Cavalier's odometer backlight was burnt out. Yeah, I've had a lot of cars over the last few years.

Digital is much better. It's a lot harder to fake mileage on digital.

I've been working on a digital one on and off for a few years that has everything in one display. I think I gave up on it a few years ago because it got way too busy. But the original concept was to eliminate all my analog gauges and to replace them with a single 1024x768 8" display.

That's actually pretty cool. Would it be like a dash-mounted tablet with the gauges programmed and wired into the car, or all built into the cluster natively?

A second screen-only display tied to a CarPC Tablet connected to the OBDII. This second screen will be built into the area formerly occupied by the cluster.
