My father owns a diesel in Europe, an old SEAT, but we'd never consider getting one here in the U.S., it's just foolish, the initial price premium over a gas version coupled with the fact that diesel is significantly more expensive than gasoline in the U.S.(in Europe diesel is cheaper than gasoline) means that that you're almost certain to spend more money on that diesel than on the gas version (the exception is of course, an older diesel that can run biofuel or veg. oil with little modification.) In the U.S. you're pretty much always better off with a hybrid or fuel efficient gas car.
