I'd say the mechanic was a bit thick headed, but what do you guys think?

It happens.

Kinja'd!!!

I dealt with the same issue last year in a car that had the coolant go bad.

I've never heard of anything like that. I probably would have wondered what the hell was going on sooner than that, but if the radiator's holding and passing water, I would assume that it's fine too. Fucking Volkswagens... If there was that much sediment in the radiator though, how blocked do you think his water jacket was? Also, how the hell did that much shit get in there in the first place?

I've not heard of that before, but similar issues with flow can be devilishly tricky to pin down. Sediment in itself is not an uncommon problem, but I suspect the flow wasn't quite as good/clear as he thought it was. Running water through is something I would find normal as a backyard mechanic, but surely the weight should have been a hint, as would any scum washing out - and as a professional, he should have had the ability to check the temperature across the radiator. It's not hard- if he's worth his salt he should have a handheld temperature reader, and one side of the radiator being very cool should have been a warning sign - even without noticing that the coolant return hose was cooler than the engine temp would suggest.

The bottom line being, a specialist should have found the issue, but it's not entirely surprising they didn't, merely a sign of mediocrity. It's an odd, but very plausible problem.

I would have never guessed that.

That's not saying a whole lot coming from me, though.

Semi-soluble silicates isn't just alliteration, it's a sign that something has gone horribly wrong. Sometimes mixing coolants, but not always.

I would say the mechanic is a pretty poor mechanic but I don't necessarily think that he was intentionally trying to screw the guy.

That being said, someone asked what the water jacket is like that if the radiator is that messed up. If I was that guy I would be looking to have the engine block checked out by a competent mechanic to see if the water jacket is screwed and be prepared to dump the car or write off the engine.
