Maybe this says more about sellers on the list of Craigs than anything else, but every car I've bought, they've written a tiny amount (sub $100 range) as the sale price on the title to save me having to pay full sales tax, some despite my pleas to be honest. I have remedied this by informing the SOS of their error, and paying the full, proper amount to avoid tax evasion. A couple hundo isn't worth federal prison to me. Has anyone else experienced this type of dishonesty/pushyness from sellers to under-report the sale price?
Have the cars I've bought off CL (albeit in nicer condition than mine.)
(Owned for literally 10 minutes, charging system failed catastrophically when pulling out of seller's driveway. Luckily, he took it back with minimal bribery.)

I've witness writing it down by a bit, like putting $1000 instead of $1300, but never sub $100. That seems pretty foolish.

I bought my brothers R1 for $2.
It was more of changing hands, keep it away from his fiancé ( out of sight out of mind).
Had to get a motorized bill of sale, told the bank lady and she told us a similar story.

Usually the sellers just leave it blank and let you fill out whatever you want. If the DMV finds the value too low, they'll try to question you on it, send you some form to explain the low price, like the car was in poor condition or something, or to otherwise write an alibi.
Even then if they don't like your story they'll just charge you tax based on the book value. And I've never heard of someone going to jail over understating the value, and no federal time because there's no national sales tax.

Couldn't you in that case list it as a gift?

In my case the sellers were quite insistent that I write a value much lower than the one I paid. Even though the consequences might not be so dire, I just would rather pay the tax to avoid inconvenience.

My parents looked it up once for a camper they had given to them, cheap pop up.
You can only do a no taxable gift from one person to another ONCE IN A LIFETIME, so why waste that on a bike or camper.
I'll look it up and see if I can confirm that.

Now I'm thinking they might be curbstoners not wanting to report the sale as income or something. Best guess I can think of.

That could very well be. I think I need to be more aware of who I'm buying from.

Ok, I stand corrected.
Someone has to pay taxes on it, might as well be for $2 Or something. I may be interpreting that wrong though.

Gotcha, I wasn't sure about all of this tomfoolery before. I appreciate you putting in the time to clear it up.

My first private party purchase (through CL, of course), put down a pretty small amount for the car to save me on tax. It screws you if you don't truly accept it as-is, but the people at the CA DMV didn't question it in the slightest. The most recent one was by the books and I paid a shitload of tax on it, which sucked, but doesn't bother me that much.
If you're going to take advantage of the tax laws, why not go all-out? The car I bought was gifted to the guy I bought it from, so he paid zero tax and didn't even need to register or change the plates. He could have just gifted it to me and nobody would have been the wiser. It would have even been good for the environment since I'd still be using the original plates...
Then again, paying sales tax on something like that periodically instead of paying income tax saves me tons, so I really don't mind paying.

Didn't think about how as-is implications worked into all of this, that's very interesting.

Well that is for Missouri. Your state may be different.
