Despite their continual delays, I keep seeing ads for Elio motors ads here and there. I'm really pulling for them to at least survive long enough to see production, if for no other reason than to make the roads more interesting when you sit in traffic looking around.

I had a chance to sit in one of their prototypes a while back and kind of liked it, but I'm a weird guy and I like weird things. It might be a decent commuter car or a first car for teen drivers.

Kinja'd!!!

What do you guys think? Will it ever see the light of day?

Unfortunately, I doubt they will live to even do a pilot run at Caddo. The question is whether they will die on their own, get taken down in a shareholder/deposit payer lawsuit, or fall apart in an SEC investigation.

That last part of what you said, about the SEC investigation, has captured my attention. What have you heard?

That isn't based on anything concrete, other than the fact that all of their figures are completely unrealistic and seem to have been pulled out of thin air, and that they are taking deposits on a car that they will never be able to actually deliver.

This is a pretty good look at why everything they are claiming makes zero sense and may be borderline fraud: http://gas2.org/2013/08/16/fin…

Sounds a little like what happened to Aptera. (The ones that were built were built in the building directly behind me now) edit: The guy that wrote that article could afford to learn some manners. One doesn't need to be an asshole in order to make a point.

I've been following them, because the idea is pretty nifty. Recently Elio has stated that their legal team is successfully pushing a new legal classification "autocycle" for their car so you can use an auto license and no helmet. They also stated that the last parts supplier's meeting confirmed the price tag is possible. I'm hopeful for them, and it seems that they have made too much progress to consider it vaporware. Unlike the dale, parts suppliers are involved (the people who make engines for Mercedes has made the engine for the elio), and they have a whole legal team pushing for the elio to have a convenient classification.

Mercedes makes their own engines. (I used to work in their factory in AL.) So, who exactly are they using to build the engine, and is it still a clone of the old Metro engine?

sorry not exactly Mercedes, its IAV (they make a lot of engines for ford, GM, VAG and others including smart, which is probably why I thought mercedes). And no, they started with a modified metro engine, but it wasn't designed for such a small load and wasn't efficient enough, so IAV's making one from scratch that's designed around the elio's curb weight

Hmmm....Now I'm interested in getting a shell and a metro engine. Small weight + Big engine= fun.....With three wheels it might = suicide.... I may need to reconsider that plan.
