My dad is thinking about picking one up to replace his 2005 Lexus ES which has around 205k miles on it. He drives about 35k miles per year and wants a quiet and comfortable car. You can pick up the LS's with around 100k miles for 18-19k. Some better models around 21k.
Is it as reliable as the legendary 400 and the 430? What would be a better alternative?

My dad has a fully loaded 2008 LS460 he picked up off a Loaner fleet. He loves it and absolutely nothing has gone wrong. It's a great car and in that class I don't think there's anything that can "out-reliable" it.

I used to sell Lexus, and that generation of LS was always an astounding car to me. They're so smooth, so quiet, so comfortable. They're obscenely high quality, and the 4.6L V8 is a well proven engine at this point. There isn't really anything they're known for having a problem with...about the only luxury car I can think being known more for reliability is Lexus' own ES350, and that isn't really in the same ballpark. They're fantastic cars, I really can't recommend them enough.
As for the Hyundai...the Equus really isn't a competitor to the LS460. I mean would you want the third generation of one of the most reliable, well built cars in the world or the first attempt by a manufacturer who has just now attained legitimacy? Nobody cross shopped those cars, people who bought an Equus (both of them) bought them because it was a larger/more well equipped car in at a much lower price point. You're not gonna go wrong in an LS. You're just not.
