Some days are just better than others, that's how life works. For example, this past Saturday I went to a Ferrari Club of America cruise in at the Petersen Automotive Museum and it was ok. Ferrari's are neat cars that have a rich heritage but they have always felt a bit alien to me. In my experience Ferrari owners aren't the friendliest or most interesting people, they just like owning a Ferrari for the sake of owning a Ferrari. Obviously there are exceptions, I'm sure there are very nice folks out there who own Ferraris but I haven't met them. Let's just say I'm not in the crowd that chases the prancing pony.
So when I realized that Luftgekühlt 2 was taking place the day after the lackluster Ferrari event, I was overjoyed. Held on the sprawling Bandito Brothers compound in Culver City, CA, the event was advertised as the largest gathering of air cooled Porsches in the world. Whether that record was actually set I do not know but it certainly felt that way. Every corner I turned there were more vehicles to be seen, all with varying degrees of modification and care. Every time I thought I had found my favorite, something else caught my eye just a few moments later. For a couple hours on Sunday, heaven was a parking lot in Los Angeles.
The cult of Porsche is one I easily identify with for a number of reasons, perhaps the most important being that the majority of classic Porsche owners drive the living daylights out of their cars. They aren't afraid to customize the cars to better reflect what it is about the brand that interests them. Some folks like the ostentatious flared out look, others the road rally, ready for anything look. Afterall, Porsche owners are as varied as the models themselves, from those that worship at the church of the humble 914 to the deep pocketed preachers of the gospel of 964 Turbo, they're all obsessed with the quirky cars from Stuttgart. That's why I love Porsches and Porsche culture, because it's inclusive whereas Ferrari culture (and a number of other performance brands) feel exclusive. Luftgekühlt is all about bringing people together, whether they own a Porsche, aspire to own a Porsche or just appreciate the good design, all are welcome.
Big tip of the hat to Patrick Long, Howie Idleson, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for putting on a killer event. Already looking forward to Luftgekuhlt 3 and attending with a 911.
Lastly, there were a TON of photographers and videographers in attendance so I would suggest tracking #luftgekuhlt and #myluftgekult on Instagram for even more media than what I have for ya'll below.
Cheers!
Andrew Maness writes about cars because he has one and also has a computer. He's been known to drunkenly tweet as !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and upload photos to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . He also has a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and thinks talking about himself in the 3rd person is really weird but knows it's necessary if he wants to be taken seriously as an automotive journalist.

Thanks man, I was really hoping it'd get picked up. Apparently there was some car thingy going on in Geneva when I posted it and it got lost in the shuffle.
Either that or people don't like pictures of air cooled Porsches.

Many thanks for still publishing so many good pics from that event. It was AWESOME, indeed! Also, like your comment about F-car events being exclusive where as PORSCHE ones being INCLUSIVE. A nice way to put it. Never thought of it that way. A friendly bunch of P-car enthusiast definitely attended this one! Can't wait till next year!
Oh, as far as the 'world's biggest gathering' is concerned, it could very well be The PORSCHE Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca this September. If you have not attended any previous ones, you ABSOLUTELY MUST ATTEND one eventually. They appear every four years, so plan ahead! It's definitely worth the effort, no matter which corner of this planet of ours one would be coming from. Also AN AWESOME EVENT!

I will be there this September, fingers crossed that I'll be in my very own air cooled vehicle.
Thanks for the compliments!
