I drove my mother-in-laws Tiguan last night. When I pushed the throttle down its stops at 95% and then feels like you push a button under the pedal to get the last 5%. Does anyone know what i'm talking about and what is up with that?

Typically a setup like that is to force downshifts when you've got the pedal all the way down, IIRC. That final tiny bit of pedal means you're screaming to Mr. Scott for more power and aren't getting it, so the next best thing is a lower gear.

I think this question has popped up a few times before. I'm still curious about it, but don't remember anyone being 100% sure on an answer.

In the Mercedes models I've owned it asks for an additional downshift. The car doesn't always oblige.

It's a kick down, when you pass that point it forces the car to downshift. I also have a VAG and wondered about that when I got it.

It's a kick down for the transmission, IIRC. Seems like it's a mostly German thing though, I've only seen them in BMWs. My E36 has one, for example. Press it and the damn thing goes like the dickens.
