My steering wheel is currently more shiny than Kim's ass and I'd like to get it to a relatively matte finish again. Has anybody used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to try and get rid of that shiny surface? I'm strongly considering it.

it is real leather, so I would take it off and treat it a few times with leatherique, followed by the protectant "prestine clean" by the same company. Non glossy finish to the protectant, and the leatherique will push all that slime out of the wheel

in theory it sounds like it would work. They're basically just super find abrasives. Maybe some steel wool if that's not enough?
Mine has some gouges in it and I'm looking to get a cover on it. But that's a task all in its own unless you want neon dragons or leopard print.

I wouldn't recommend he take it off. That could get rather, difficult. He should really just do what he can with it on, unless he's an experienced seamstress.

ha not the leather itself, just the wheel so he can keep it warm

I don't know. They're pretty abrasive. I'd be worried it would distress the leather too much and you'd end up with some ghetto suede which would look horrendous in a week. If you're going to do it do a spot that's hard to see and wait a month or two to see how it turns out.

You're supposed to do it lightly from the sound of things, like very lightly. I've seen a picture of somebody who did it to a Passat wheel and it seems to have turned out fine.

I don't know, isn't it polished from the use? I mean some gook will come off but, leather does this, as it wears no?

From my understanding, most of the wear on the wheel is from oils and grime from your hands and that it can be removed. I might do something similar with the shift knob, but I posted a link somewhere in here about a Passat steering wheel that the owner of the car managed to get looking like new and completely remove that shiny look. This picture doesn't do my A4 justice, but it does show that the wheel itself is quite dirty after 19 years.

I'd love to see the results, you can see your reflection in my friends s4 wheel!!

Haha, and I love this wheel to death. It's got bolsters at the bottom, top and it feels and looks great. I'll document it on AZ and on here if I get to it today. Depending on my schedule, I'll run out and pick up one of those magic erasers at the end of the day.

I'd be careful with the eraser, a guy on the mazdaspeed forums posted about how he was cleaning his steering wheel with one and it stripped off the top layer and looked like old roughed up leather.

Was it a partly perf'd wheel?
If something happens, I'll just take it as an excuse to buy one of these.

Then working on fixing the old wheel and keeping the custom one for my next B5.

Nope, just a standard steering wheel. I'm not positive if it's genuine leather or not, so that could be a deciding factor as well. If getting that nice perforated wheel is an option if it doesn't work out then I wouldn't be able to blame you at all for chancing it though, haha

That is true, or it may have been cheap leather. My wheel is real leather though, so I hope it'll turn out nicely. I might try the shift knob first though, since that thing is already pretty scratched up and there's some good stuff over at BFI that I'd like to buy.

This is going to sound really fucking strange, but black shoe polish made the wheel in my M3 "dull" again. And made it black again rather than the dark grey it was becoming.

I'll try that if the Mr. Clean thing doesn't work!

The stuff on the wheel is the same stuff on your hands. Use mild soapy water.
