I'm asking this out of sheer curiosity, what is the average upper-middle-class apartment size in HK?

That Land Rover Defender is actually a 1-bedroom apartment in HK. Rent is $1500 USD/mo.

Around 1000 square feet, or a little more. Property prices, as you will definitely have heard, are ridiculous over here. Even up north where it's less densely populated, one square foot is around HK$10,000 or US$1,280. My family was very lucky to get the apartment where we're living right now, because my dad used to work in the government and got onto a housing scheme. The area today is definitely upper middle class, but back then, it was just quarters for civil servants. Back in '77, my apartment cost HK$100,000 - about HK$1-2 million (US$128,000) in today's prices. And yet today, the property which I live in is valued at HK$16 million, or just over US$2 million. So sadly, Tohru is eerily right - if you want to live in any place that's got some space, pay up.

I was browsing http://www.jamesedition.com/real_estate because looking at apartments in places I'd like to live in is one of my pastimes. I imagined it was expensive, but not THAT expensive, parking space must also be at a premium there right?

Very much so. Luckily, a parking space came with my apartment, so I don't know as much about the prices, but I do know that they stretch into the hundreds of thousands of HKD. Actually, that Nissan and Defender are parked in the visitor carpark spaces, so luckily, we've got somewhere to park my uncle's old Civic which is coming into my care tonight. Also, some of our neighbours don't drive, so they might be obliging and rent their spaces out to us for comparatively tiny sums of money.

The high property prices are also one reason behind the Occupy Central protests - the young people see no hope for the future because they clearly will never be able to afford any housing in Hong Kong, anywhere. I probably won't have any hope either - that's why generally, the home is usually lived in by two or three generations of the same family in Asian countries. I'm just looking at that website right now and if my family sold our old home right now, we'd be able to buy this sensational house in Utah for half the price.

//sigh

Awesome! Three symbols of Asian social and economic status all in the same lot! Does this lot usually look this way or is it a special day?

Or this house in the Philippines http://www.jamesedition.com/real_estate/ph…

We have a similar problem in Brazil (not nearly as serious as HK), the main companies have their offices in the most central neighborhoods, apartment prices are really high and public transport is utter shit. I was lucky enough to get my grandad's apartment. Hopefully by the time you get to the realty deals and such there will be some progress in this situation.

I've seen a 5-door Defender with "UN" markings in Hung Hom....I found that hilarious and a little sad.
