There is support to change our current seat belt laws in Maine, which is now a primary offense you can be pulled over for, to apply only to those under 18. Freedom son
IMHO if you want to rock around without a seatbelt, go right for it. Same thing with helmets and bikers. Smell you later motherfuckers.

I always thought that the reason for helmet & seatbelt laws wasn't to keep people safe. The reason for them is that it's generally really expensive to clean up after traffic fatalities.
The state doesn't care if you die, they just don't want you to make a mess on the roads that they have to maintain.

I am totally ok with this law.
I have said that the insurance companies should go further with this and make is so that if it can be proven that you were not wearing a seatbelt, they are not liable for your injuries because, well. You are stupid.

Really debating whether to put lap belts in the '66 Mustang or leave it stock (It's technically titled as a '65, so belts were only an option). There's no place to mount shoulder points since it's a convertible.
It's safer to be thrown from the car anyway, right?*
*Totally kidding.

Agreed it's a stupid law but if you're riding in my car you're wearing your seat belt.

Sorry to get political here. I'm all for personal freedom but the closer we get to universal healthcare the more these freedoms will go away. Why? Because people won't want their tax bill going up because dumbass over here didn't wear a seatbelt and jackass over there can't help but drink a quart of soda a day.

Now this is totally up to you. I was in a 69 and rolled over 5-6 times with someone else driving. He had it caged and 5 points installed well, only reason 505 is still here to talk your ears off

I come from a country with universal healthcare, and while we do have fairly strict seatbelt laws - quite sensibly, so far as I'm concerned - people are just as free to drown themselves in sugar as they were 67 years ago.

Sorry, but it's stupid to not wear a seat belt and as such, it's an obvious law to have in place. All you are is a projectile for your other passengers or other motorists if you get into accident.
It's equally as stupid to not wear a helmet.

yea but this is America, we get upset over stupid stuff, take things over the top, and create dumb laws that end up creating more problems than they solve

The problem is if the person behind you doesn't wear a belt, they're going to fly into you and do some damage in a crash.

Isn't it amazing no one pushes for people who CHOOSE NOT TO WEAR A HELMET OR SEATBELT take financial responsibility for their medical expenses.
You want to be a free enough to not wear a safety device but you don't want to be free enough to pay for own bills and own your choice.
This is a perfect example of being American, and fucking idiotic er patriotic.

I am all for rights, but let me pose this question. Should they also agree to waive their right to personal injury? Lets say the get rear-ended at 15 mph. That's an accident anyone wearing a seatbelt should theoretically walk away from unscathed. Because joe blow chose not to wear a seat belt he needs facial reconstructive surgey. Should the at fault parties insurance (who may be the same insurance company you use) have to pay the $100,000 and pass that cost across all it's clients because Joe didn't feel comfortable wearing a belt?
