You do realize that all of these people flocking to IS, are doing so from a status of boredom and youthful idealism to a religion that they do not truly understand the cost of being a radical fundamentalist in? If you have 40 minutes to spare some time this weekend take a look at this Vice news embedded in IS controlled Syria coverage. A lot of the guys you see in jail who end up getting flogged or even executed are typically muslims who have traveled to the middle east in the interest of jihad. They have never lived under true Sharia law, and get arrested for drinking alcohol, doing drugs (methamphetamines, heroin, coke, etc) and smoking and eating on the days of Ramadan. This is filmed from the perspective of the IS press officers and while it does not cover the entire scope of what is going on, it is not unlike Nazi Germany in which normal people felt themselves to be elveated by joining a unified cause.

I was just letting you know it is pretty widespread these so-called "regular" people fleeing their responsible, albeit boring lives and joining a crusade that they do not fully understand.

Not trying to start any kind of internet row over this, just wanting to have an intelligent conversation, which cannot be done when referencing almost all American news media.

I think I understand what you're saying. You're saying that CNN's analogy wasn't actually that bad because a lot of these guys are regular dudes who join something that they don't fully understand and therefore don't fully support?

The one thing I don't get though is how regular guys could be OK with joining a militant group that cuts off people's heads. I can see them not understanding what Sharia law is actually like until they experience it. But how do they morally reconcile leaving wherever they live to join a group that beheads and crucifies people?

My solution:

These people want to go and fight and subsequently die for their god/religion - LET THEM. Holy shit this is legitimately the best opportunity to rid the world of a largely horrible demographic.
