I came across something odd last night, apparently you can get a Vermont vehicle registration and license plates, and not even live in Vermont. I know this seems odd, but the first thing I thought of was, if I have Vermont plates, I no longer have no longer have to deal with Illinois emissions and wouldn't get tickets for not having front plates in Illinois.

Don't you have to pass inspection though? Because I know Vermont has inspection.

A friend of mine here in Wisconsin (where we also don't have emissions except for the southeast corner of the state like Milwaukee & Racine) has several out-of-state friends who have their cars registered at his house in Madison, to avoid emissions in their states.

Interesting I should try this just for the lolz. Vermont plates in NM would be great

I hate front plates in Illinois. :(

I haven't had to do emissions here yet, but is it really that bad?

Reminds me of when I sold my '94 Saab 9000 Aero 11 years ago. The guy who bought it flew in from Texas without a plate, so I just let it go with my old VT plates on it. I only lived 15 miles from the NY border at that point in my life, so it wasn't a big deal. Once he cleared Fair Haven, he was good to go.

Do state inspections matter if the vehicle is stationed in another state?

I'm guessing you live in the Chicago-land area. I live around the Springfield area and have never had to go through an emissions check.

Couldn't tell ya. I suppose you could file for renewal, get your stickers in the mail and just not get an inspection sticker. Who, in your state, is gonna know the difference?

They go by "Mans word"

"Is this car good"

"Yes"

"Ok here are your plates and stickers"

:D

Hmm. I'm out in the northern suburbs, but I also don't expect to have any emissions issues for quite some time. It will really only come into play when I eventually add an aftermarket header to my FR-S, and have to make decisions about cats or no-cats.

Gotcha! One good thing about living in the stix is that they just ain't care.

Well they just read the OBD2 port so it's fairly easy to pass unless you have a CEL

That's what I figured. Nothing a tune (which is necessary with a new header anyways) can't take care of. haha

Some places can be picky about that. Back when I lived in AZ I had an out of state friend get a summer job there. Police kept trying to ticket him for having out of state plates after only 2 weeks.

Then again now I work with someone who has a PA license, FL plates, a TX address and works in LA. Go figure

I would say leave the cats unless you plan on big power down the line. I don't think they rob as much power these days but I could be wrong.

Think of the polar bears

Yeah, that is what I was actually thinking. I don't plan on going forced induction anytime soon (if ever), so I will likely just get hi-flow cats. I may removed the one on the front pipe, but will at least be keeping the 1st cat at the header.

Hang on to them whatever you choose. OEM cats are super expensive.

Yeah, basically Cook and any county bordering Cook has to do emissions checks. And they take it damn serious, your license gets suspended if you don't get it done.

And OB2 is required for anything 1996 or newer. So you need to keep the Cat. I was contemplating doing an engine swap into my RX-8 when the rotary blew, but couldn't get a straight answer on how that would work. with the emissions.

Or: Buy a lot in the Gulf Breeze/Navarre area of Florida, which are scheduled to have bridge directly to the beach built, and register here, where you could literally get a tag for half of a car. Plus, due to that bridge, the super cheap lots are going to appreciate quite a bit. Then when you retire, since you already live up north, you'll be early prepared to do what seemingly all northerners do.

I stumbled upon this last night

http://www.chinonthetank.com/2014/04/get-a-…

After googling around I didnt see anything that contradicted it. I saw some other places mention it as well.

replying to your first post, - is it really that bad?

If you are a normal person, no. It's just a waste of a half hour every other year.

However, it's all OB2 based now for anything 96 or newer. So that means no de-cat, no engine swaps, expensive repairs if something in the emissions system decides to throw a code even though it is working fine.

Also, what happens when the 25 year rule goes past 95 and I want to import a R34 Skyline or Lotus 340R, imagine everything that Doug documented is thwarted because you live in Chicagoland? Basically the 25 year rule wont apply to Chicagoland just like it doesnt work in California.

I guess my question is what happens if you don't get your car inspected? Will they deny you renewing your plates? Or are they not linked and your car legal as long as you dont get pulled over in Vermont.

Yeah, they won't deny renewal. It was kind of a stupid question, but it was the first thing I thought of.

Yay for Central Illinois! No emissions and empty country roads for miles, on top of the cheap gas.
