My mother had me take her new Volvo out for a test drive in the snow, unknown to me that it is all ice underneath. as I was going down a hill, I started braking and nothing happend except for the ABS clicking on and off. There was a pole at the bottom of the hill, and I was positive I was going to hit it, then at the last possible moment, just s few feet from the pole, the tires and brakes caught a grip, and I ended up stopping just about a foot short of said pole. Approve is a picture of the aforementioned Volvo sitting safely in my driveway, after its near death. Also, it appears to have a hefty cocaine problem. Also, I had a really hard time getting up the driveway.

Pictured: the tracks of a Volvo waddling up a driveway, its stride affected by the amount of shit filling its pants.

It was an experience, I thought for sure I was going into the wall especially once I hit the grass. But at least no we know not to put high speed, quick change of directions in an autocross course with 12 degrees of banking!

I was sure from the video that you were going to hit that wall. You defiantly had someone looking over your shoulder that day.

Question. Why do all snow covered vehicles have the wipers up? Is it to prevent them from getting buried with snow?

Nah, they were really cool about it, they were more upset with themselves for making an unsafe course. They were actually glad it was me who it happened to because Im in a higher grip lower horsepower car so if it was that bad for me it wouldve been much much worse for the guys in low grip high horsepower cars

I put them up so that they wouldn't freeze to the windshield.

I had an oh shit moment in december that did end up in the wall. It SUCKS. The car lost grip on a dirty road and that was the end of it, countersteering, braking (as last resource), nothing made a difference, once the car started sliding, only the wall stopped it.

So the rubber sticks to the windshield, makes sense to have them up then.

Damn. That sounds awful. How badly was it damaged? I couldn't imagine how pissed my mom would have been if I wrecked her 2 month old car, so that greatly increased my panic as I was sliding.

It gets wet, and freezes down to the glass, and it can break the wiper blades off.

Well luckily i didn't need a tow truck. The mustang spun out after one rear tire went over a bump/hole on the road when i was taking a curve. So i countersteered but the car still slided until the back of the car hit the wall. The damage was a cracked tail light, misaligned bumper and so the trunk almost wont close properly, The gearbox now makes some noises when i pass over speedbumps, dont know why. I finally called insurance 3 days ago, and im taking it to the shop tomorrow or friday.

Sounds smart to file a claim. I guess it easily could have turned out way worse.

This used to strike me as pretty funny; where I'm from the winters are generally too cold for this to be a real problem! Same with icy roads; when it's too cold for liquid or melting the worst conditions are snowpack and accumulations of supah-fluffy snow.
Now that I live in CO I've broken two sets of wipers and have picked up the "silly" habit.

Doesn't the Volvo have a heated section of the windshield to prevent the wipers from freezing, or to unfreeze if already frozen?

Basically did the same thing in my Civic. I was coming off of an off-ramp and hit some ice in the braking zone. The only input that got me anywhere was when I eventually yanked the handbrake and threw the car sideways to try to bleed off some speed and soften in the impact as I started to go down the embankment. I ended up smacking into a Chevy Tahoe that had previously made the same mistake and taken out a sign. Bounced a good ten feet off of her. Had three airbags go off in my face and the entire front box was shifted over about 5 inches.
It's been three weeks and my pelvis is still all fucked up from impacting the handbrake. If it wasn't for the Benchmade I carry spreading out the force, though, it'd probably be broken, I guess.
(That one ramp ended up collecting a total of three cars before a cop just decided to close the whole bloody thing and wait for a salt truck.)
On the bright side, I ended up taking the piddly little insurance payout and, after about three weeks of arguing with my mom, went and bought a rather nice Mazda3.
Requiescant in pace, Serenity.

That is a terrifying thing to read. From my experience injuries (in)and pain (in my case neck) from accidents take a while to get better, but I certainly hope your pelvis gets to feeling better. As for your new Mazda, enjoy it. One of my good friends has a beat to hell 2013 3 Sedan with the 2.0, and she has let be drive it about 3 times, and it seems to be very zippy, fun to drive, and easy to maneuver.

It ended up going a lot better than it could have. I'm glad I had the foresight to go in sideways, because if I didn't I'd probably be dealing with a few broken ribs instead of a bruised pelvis and some minor whiplash.
As for the Mazda, I ended up finding a 2010 s with the 2.5. As much as I loved my humble little Civic, this thing makes Serenity look like a pig even on the shitty tyres the dealer gave me. I foresee having a lot of fun in that little hatchback.

Sounds like you knew what you were doing, very well in your accident. Also, I can only imagine how much more fun a 2.5 is in your mazda vs my friend's automatic 2.0.

Just applying a little armchair racing to real life, I suppose. It was always instructed to go in sideways if your brakes fail at the track I used to go to. Figured it applied well to this situation.

I guess that does make sense. If you are going forwards or backwards, and your brakes won't work. the wheels are rolling, but if you are going sideways, your tires are basically your brakes.
