I was listening to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! piece on speed cameras in the outer boroughs of NYC.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
It is a great article and both sides come across well. Long story short-
Tickets are issued for 11 mph over. Some official talks about the different stopping distances at speed. One of the set of numbers he throws is something around the lines of, if you are going 40 as opposed to 30- your breaking distances are 100 feet longer. That seemed high to me. Can we find anything to support or disprove Mr. Official? What kind of vehicle are we talking about and with what weight? Should we link to the top gear?

They like to make shit up. They also like to use figures from the 1950s.

The Mitsubishi Mirage (arguably [though I use that term loosely] the worst car on the road) stops from 70 in 180 feet, so so much for 10 mph adding 100 feet.

Boom! Slows from 60 kph (37.5 mph in American) in 48 feet.

Well, hello and welcome to Motorweek 91! We're glad to have you with us. Today ("today" being some time in 1991) we're taking this Ferrari Mondial Coupe to Roebling Road Raceway, where we will record a 60MPH to zero distance of 105 feet. Oh, you may say, that's a Ferrari, surely it has better-than-average brakes! OK then, here's an '89 Cadillac Fleetwood, a porker by any standards, which goes from 60MPH to zero in 134 feet. So you can take that "100 feet" business you quoted with more than a grain of salt.

Hmmmm, 100feet is more than 48 feet. But better believe this official, he prolly has an employee I.D. card.

Although I don't agree with there numbers, I believe it's a generalization of this equation
(Speed of vehicle)x(reaction time)+(minimum braking distance)=(fudged number)

All that they said is that it takes 100' longer. For all we know, stepping on your brakes could cause you to go backwards 50 feet.

Also- I might have used the caddy as an example.

Using this website it seems accurate, but there are a lot of variables that aren't accounted for.

Speed cameras. Another reason I love living in the south west. Aside socal people actually take freedom seriously out here.
