Not nearly enough mentions of synergy. Or "I know someone". 5/10, on track for a 2.2% raise and nothing more. Now excuse me, I have a 9:00 that I need to show up at 9:20 for. If you keep them waiting, they'll be more attentive to you when you show up because you were obviously so busy but still bothered to show up.

Another trick: explain something you are unsure of in very technical terms. The non-technical people will not question it. They do not want to appear to not understand the technical wording and look dumb around everyone else.

Having a marketing degree, business administration4life!, and working in software development is the most awkward experience.

You sit in meetings all day listening to 30 year veterans get the business logic right, process design wrong and system architecture wrong.

Then the business analyst walks in with a customer request and suddenly everything is now wrong.

We skip documenting anything, create a deliverable, then bill the fuck all fixes after the fact to the recipient.

Want to appear smart and ruin your career? Say no and back your dissention up with evidence.

I feel like us on Oppo could generate a whole book on how to sound smart without the effort of knowing what you are talking about.

All my company does is custom application - we do more dancing to the beat of The Latest Odd Customer Request than I necessarily care for. It's mechanical hardware, too, so there's no way to un-make things that have been built wrong.

Here's an engineering standby that's so vague it works for practically everything: "Interesting, but what does that entail?"

"Do we have a(n) ___ analysis on that?" in one of various forms isn't just useful, occasionally you get things you need with it.
