At this point the germans are in an all out dick measuring arms race to see who's catalogue has the most possible combinations of model and trim level. Bimmer and Merc must be in the hundreds at this point. The question is, where does it end!?
Also, it's abrt damn time we switched things up around here. Hurrah!

It's been like this for ages, the US tends to get only a very small cross section of what these brands have to offer. Take the 3-series. I'm only looking at drive trains here, and I'm ignoring the 3 GT because it's a 3 GT. In the US you get this:
320i manual sedan
320i auto sedan
320ix auto sedan
328i manual sedan
328i auto sedan
328ix auto sedan
328d auto sedan
328xd auto sedan
335i manaul sedan
335i auto sedan
335ix manual sedan
335ix auto sedan
hybrid sedan
328ix auto wagon
328xd auto wagon
That's 15. This is a lot for the US. Now look at Germany:

That's 91 , versus 15 in the US. And that's just drive train options for the 3 series, excluding the GT and the M3. I didn't even look at option packages and the like.

First of all, wow, that a list if I ever saw one. You're right, they have always been generous with the power train options and body styles. My point was more that they now offer things like a front wheel drive mpv, two hybrids, a bunch of suv's, a bunch of four door sports uselesstility coupes, etc. They've also split the 1 and 2, the 3 and 4, and the 5 and 6 ( and then made a 4 door version of the 6 coupe) Plus the options like m-sport cars, or cars with m-performance packages, which they keep adding.
All of which have tons of different available configurations, as you showed. That's a lot of freakin' cars.
