Kinja'd!!!

My mom has this 2014 Impreza for a week while the CTS is in the shop. It is AWD, with the 2.0 Boxer (thanks, m-b-w) mated to a CVT (thanks again, everyone). Does anybody want to know anything about it? I think it is quite terrible in a lot of ways, but I know a lot of you guys like these things. So, if you have a question, fire away.

In what way is it most terrible?

How is the reverse engagement at 60 mph?

How is the transmission? My family has an older (2008) Outback for a spare car and the 4 speed auto is just junk.

Sorry to correct you, but it's a 2.0 boxer mated to a CVT.

We dont link this thing...it's missing a turbo...which means is awd system isn't the same as any subbie with a trubo. That model is basically fwd until slip happens. 90% of the power is to teh front 10% to the rear. Then you add to it that it has no limited slips.. so one tire in the back one in the front moves. It's still better then a Honda.

How quickly does it put you to sleep while driving it? Have you made it out of the driveway yet?

Sure seems like a 6 speed to me. Quite sure a CVT wouldn't have a paddle-shift mode. Or would it?

Interior quality isn't great (not as bad as my '02 Taurus, but still), the car manages to feel bigger than it actually is, steering is super numb, I don't think it looks particularly good, etc.

The Subaru has planned shift points, and they are shift-able.

Just how terrible is the CVT? Subaru is supposed to have some of the best CVTs out there at this point. But if it's still terrible, that isn't really saying much. So I'm curious.

Considering I drive a '02 Taurus with a truly tragic 4-speed auto, it really isn't all that bad. I would never call it great, but its not terrible at all. Totally livable.

Well, you gotta remember, I'm driving a '02 Taurus right now. So this is still more exciting :) Compared to other cars, though, its boring as hell.

It really isn't too bad, honestly. As I said to E. Julius, I would never call it great, but it is totally livable. It lets the engine rev a bit too high sometimes, and the paddle shifters are pretty vague, but, otherwise, not too bad.

Completely agreed there. Definitely on my list of worst cars I've ever driven.

Kinja'd!!!1

Not exactly; it is 60/40 according to Subaru , and that's really only on dry pavement at a constant speed. The power is shifted almost constantly based on how the car is being driven. For example power is shifted rearward as the weight transferred rearward, such as under acceleration. The power split is 50/50 in first and reverse for the 4EAT. I'm not entirely sure how it works for the CVT, but I imagine it is the same in reverse, and similar in "first" with the paddle shifters (and possibly at low speed). X-Mode should take care of that in the SJ Forester and BS Outback.

The open diffs aren't the best, however.

Having one of these in my family I have to disagree with many of the things you don't like about it. I love driving it. One of the best cars* of driven.

No, lol, not really. I'm sure I'll experience way worse things than this. Its better than my Taurus, the Jeep Patriot I drove, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited I drove...... you know what? I probably take it off the worst list. I still don't like it, but I guess there are plenty worse things.

I like the styling (probably the only one that does), I like the way it drives, ours seems to drive pretty well. The steering isn't numb at all, I can feel the road pretty well through it. CVT is okay, not great, but okay. Interior, again while not great, isn't the worst I've been in. Also the AWD is great for my area. We've had ours for over a year and it's never once faulted us. Oh, and the size seems perfect as well.

I can't believe I spelled hear as here....

Looks are subjective, so I won't argue there. The steering still felt very numb to me. I get more road feel from my Taurus, and that's saying a lot. The CVT isn't too bad; I'll 100% agree there. Not great, but not terrible. While the interior is not the worst I've been in either, I kind of expected a bit more out of a car that many people associate with quality. The AWD is great, and I wouldn't complain there. Though, I really haven't drove it in bad weather. The size of the car itself I don't mind, but, once I got inside, the car felt WAY bigger than it actually was. That was my issue.

It may be different coming into it as a rental compared to living with one for around 40k miles and 16 months. Ours is also the top model too, although it has cloth seats instead of leather, which is no problem at all where we are.

Its a beige mobile. And dear god don't get me started on Wranglers. They're like a toy, fun at times yes. But to live with one everyday? God no, not for me.

Yeah, agreed. And, my God, it was awful. We had it as a rental car while on vacation. I'm sure, off-road, it would show its true colors. But, on the road, I seriously couldn't find a single thing I liked about it. Not one.

Subaru has 3 or 4 different AWD platforms I guess that was my main point. So even if it's And they are a "symmetrical AWD" ie no transfer case sticking out the side and all the motors are mounted the correct way face front to back, but they aren't all created equally still.

I do still think that is the best econ box out there if you are willing to give up a few mpgs over something fwd.
