Kinja'd!!!

Being a grownup is kinda cool, because assuming you have a decent job, and are smart with your money, when you want to get something, you just do. But right now my gf is between jobs, which means I'm paying all the bills, so I'm not making any major purchases.

Luckily she's about to get an offer for a new job—they sent her the background check form yesterday which is a good sign—but until then, I'm trying to avoid making non-essential purchases. Well, sorta.

Here are things I want to buy, in no particular order:

New iPad or other tablet to replace my old iPad 2

Kinja'd!!!

Stand mixer

Kinja'd!!!

New laptop for the gf (I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13 I got last summer, but not sure she'd want to switch from Windows to Mac)

Kinja'd!!!

Proper blender (gf wants one with a smoothie mixer cup)

Kinja'd!!!

New tv stand

Kinja'd!!!

Camera lens(es)

Kinja'd!!!

Air purifier for my bedroom (we already have a big one downstairs)

Kinja'd!!!

Vacation to somewhere tropical

Kinja'd!!!

I'm setting a rule for myself though, which is that each of these things, I'm not going to buy until I set aside double the price, so that forces me to continue saving instead of depleting anything.

Damn responsibility.

Aside from the stand-up mixer my gf bought as a present to herself, those are all on my list of things.

Though I'm not a big iPad fan and may just get a Chromebook or something to replace the iPad 2...

That stand mixer is awesome. I've had mine almost 10 years and it's like brand new.

For blenders I would recommend the Breville:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/breville-…

The only weirdness is that in my kitchen at least the little loop on the lid JUST touches the bottom of the cabinet where I want to keep the blender. I made do but it's a little tiny annoyance.

I bought a bedroom furniture set instead of a ps4. When I realized what I'd done there was definitely an odd moment.

I've got a Macbook Pro retina 13" so I've got the laptop bases covered fine.

I had an iPhone 3GS many years ago which has since been followed up by several Android phones, so I'm open to Android tablets as well. But I do iPads.

Oh and this reminds me I need to add to the list a new laptop for the gf.

Mixer envy is real.

Real vacations are worth it as well. Make sure you forget your work phone at home when you leave too.

It still amazes me how much furniture costs. It's ridiculous. I'm 32 and have managed to live this long without spending any real significant money on major furniture purchases. My gf is good at finding nice furniture at garage sales, so we have a slightly random assortment of nice stuff bought on the (extremely) cheap.

I've got a MBPr 13, so I would go for something not quite so big when getting a new tablet.

Using a work iPad, couldn't justify buying one.

Won a kitchenAid Just like that (but white) by filling out one of those stupid contest forms at a grocery store

Used to have that lens but sold it for the 25...then my camera died (shutter froze) and now I desperately want a GH4 like at work...but I can't afford.

Change "air" to "water for the house" and yes.

Went someplace tropical...with a sick kid...and it rained. (here comes debbie downer!)

FACT: The stand mixer is the only thing on this list worth the price. It will also last you for years and years which most of the other things won't. No regrets.

Gotcha. Yeah, unless you're big into the high-spec games, a new iPad Air 2 would be great. My sister was almost in tears at how much faster it was moving up from an Ipad 2.

I recently bought a custom made dining table and chairs set. If you can find a place that contracts w/ Amish craftsmen, the quality is very good and the price is very reasonable. I don't know that I'd get them to build TV stand/entertainment center, but tables & chairs and stuff that's existed since forever? They do a great job.

I had the original version of the 20/1.7 but it broke. I bought it used on a forum for only $200 and sold it, broken, for $100, so no great loss. The seller was selling it for so cheap because it had a spec of dust inside the front element. It basically stopped focusing at all, and refused to fire the shutter. Oh, and I kept the circular polarizer the original seller included when I bought it. I like the 20mm focal length and otherwise I'd want both a 17mm and 25mm. But I also want an Olympus 45/1.8 and 12/2.

Since I got my 13" MBP retina, I've been using my iPad a lot less. But that's also because it's an iPad 2 and has nowhere near enough RAM. Apps and Safari tabs are always reloading themselves when I do any kind of multitasking. Still works fine for watching Netflix in bed though.

I do have this place here in town. But they don't have any prices on their website.

Please note that you will not find prices on our website. We don't do this to frustrate you or make you call us for pricing. We do this because every single piece of furniture we sell is available with so many options that it is virtually impossible to price it all on a website. Most everything can come in as many as 7 different wood species, 25 different stains and finishes, and the ability to customize pieces to fit your needs.

The one I posted is some $200 screw-it-together-yourself deal. I'm super cheap when it comes to furniture.

My entire list funneled into:

1) Pay off credit card debt as soon as humanly possible, and then work on my truck loan.

Why? I'm looking at purchasing a TDI Passat in 6-8 months...which will triple my gas mileage (something worth doing because I'm looking at an annual mileage of 30,000)

Virtually everything else is on hold, unless its a minor splurge (less than $50). That, and my liquor drinking. I WILL have one money deficient vice right now...

There goes the Chromebook...need to help my GF with her laptop search. She's a graphic designer and wants to start expanding her portfolio, freelance or get something on Etsy.

I should look into bringing my old Macbook Pro up to speed...it has no memory, the battery is worthless and the charging cable takes 10 minutes of fidgeting to get a connection. Otherwise, it's great! haha

I'm tempted to get an iPad Mini 2 since it's the same damn thing as the Mini 3 except for Touch ID and $100 less. I like being able to hold it in 1 hand and don't mind the slightly smaller screen size. But if I got an Air I'd go for the Air 2 since it has the A8X instead of the A7 in the Air 1 and Mini 2/3. I don't play any fancy games on it but I do like being able to open a bunch of browser tabs and/or apps and be able to switch between them without them always reloading for lack of RAM.

a new Macbook is also on the list for me, since my wife had her 13 inch break recently. I liked the 20mm length too, more than 25 for sure, but the AF was just too slow for me. I borrow the 12-35 f/2.8 from work from time to time and thats nice. I also have a set of rokinon cineprimes with speedbooster when I need that look. what body?

Having your financial house in order is almost as satisfying as a perfectly clean and organized garage and workbench.

My job is somewhat is question right now because of low commodity prices (O&G), but because of financial discipline these last few years, I'm honestly not that worried, regardless of whether I'll lose my job in the next year or not. It's amazing what having little to no debt and good savings can do for your mindset in a situation like this! It's also quite helpful that my wife also has a good job...

I've been married 15 years, and we have three kids, but in the last year we've managed to kill off the last of our debt that's not our mortgage, and hopefully it works for us to pay for our cars from savings from here on out. Other responsible, adult things we've done in the past 5 years (many kid-related):

- not buying a bigger, fancier house when we could afford to (we have a nice home)

- purchasing life insurance

- setting up a will and a family trust

- funding 529 college savings accounts

- building up a 3 month emergency fund (liquid savings)

- ~20% each month going to long term savings (contribution + match + "pension")

I applaud your self control. Keep it up; it's worth it!

This, this is what you really need. Meat grinders, juicers, slicers, so many things go here. I have yet to see the actual mixer part used on the one in my kitchen. Though I'm not usually home when the wife bakes, so maybe.

I don't have life insurance, don't own a house, don't have kids to save up for college for, and spend too much money on my 2 vehicles. But...

I have a good emergency fund

I have a few assorted investments

I have 10% of my paychecks going to my 401k

I have an IRA where I rolled over my 401k's from previous jobs

I have zero credit card debt—but I do buy a bunch of crap on my cards and pay them off every month to get free stuff

The only monkey wrench in the works is my gf's $80k in student loan debt from getting a master's degree but that's technically not my problem until if/when we get married.

I just bought a 25$ blender from target a couple weekends ago on a whim because I wanted a frozen margarita and buying it was cheaper than 2 drinks at a restaurant. I had little faith in in but figured if it sucked I'd make my margaritas and then return it.

Turns out it makes the best frozen margaritas of any blender I've ever used, including one of those expensive ninjas like you show! The ice was all smashed to the perfect consistency. Needless to say my girlfriend and I had a great night and I'll be keeping that blender.

That doesn't necessarily help your smoothie cup conundrum other than to say give the cheap ones a shot, you might be pleasantly surprised.

I don't know what kind of rate she has on it. She consolidated separate loans into this one before we got together and she has been paying it down, but had to do an unemployment deferment when she left her job. As soon as she starts working again I'm going to help her refinance it to something more manageable.

What bothered me was that the more expensive ones often weren't appreciably nicer. you'd think a 300 dollar product would be 10x better than the 30 dollar one and it isn't not even close.
