"You need your air filter replaced but it's really hard to get to so it's going to cost more."

How do you know it needs to be changed if you can't see it?

"uuuuh"

Don't touch my car.

My response to her was to just bring the car over to my place and we'll change it ourselves.

they're saying the filter needs changed based on mileage most likely. If you look in your owners manual you will see the service interval for the airfilter it may be that the car is past it.

last time I was at one of these places they did this and I saw that it was from their computer system that had these suggested intervals in in.

They also could just be trying to get her money, but lets not jump to conclusions prematurely here.

Except they had no reasoning, not even a decent lie, so I have jumped to the ripping-her-off conclusion.

What do you mean they had no reasoning? They didn't know the mileage?

When asked, they said: "uuuuuh, well, you just have to change it"

Did they know the mileage?

or are you sure you know better than the manufacturer on when things on their vehicle should be serviced.

How would they know when it was last changed? Maybe I changed it 1000kms ago and I don't drive on any dirt roads. I think I know my car better than someone who's never seen it before.

maybe you changed it last at the previously recommended service interval, wouldn't that be the most logical assumption to make?

Given how few people take their cars on dirt roads, I doubt that was a major consideration in the design for the recommended service intervals on the vehicle.

If you just had that component serviced then you would tell them, "no thanks I just had that done"

That's fortunate that she noticed the glitch in the Matrix and didn't have the car worked on.

some autoshops will stoop to levels you can't imagine.....
