Finished machining the hubs for the FSAE car yesterday. They took about 12 hours on the cnc lathe (Haas TL1) and a few more hours on the mill.
On the lathe, they started out as 5.5" diameter rounds of aluminum. The rough shape was cut out, then off the the mill they went.
In the mill (Haas VF3), I used an old lathe chuck to hold the parts. That way, I got solid clamping and didn't have to cut soft jaws. It also made indexing the parts each time I loaded a new part easy!
The pocketing helped a little. Dropped weight by 0.3 pounds on a sub 2 lb part.

I need to see if my college has an FSAE team. If not, I'll probably try to form one. We have all the equipment we'd ever need.

I started doing FSAE at the beginning of the year. Wound up quitting and joining ASME.

12 hours? Crank those speeds and feeds.
(They look good)

Well between doing 5 of them and doing 2 set ups on each, 12 hours is close to reasonable. I ran them pretty slow and easy because holding 5.5" stock meant a lot of torque trying to pull the part out of the chuck and not a whole lot of material to hold em by. Better safe than sorry.

Oooh that looks good. The only thing I done on a machine was a cube to learn how to put plans properly (yes, on a manual mill). While some of my prof. were doing small New Beetles on a DMG Turn Mill (that's 1/2 a million euro well spent right here).

Beautiful work! Those look really nice. Do you guys have a main supplier for tooling, like Sandvik? Or is most tooling buy-as-you-need

Man, those look gooooood! Very nice.
What school are you at? I was on U Maryland's FSAE team for the TR13, the Big Aero car that almost worked. Haha.

Might just be coolant left on the face that looks like a scratch. Or a scratch. Who knows.

Not bad at all! Wish I had pictures of some of our old ones, that or the uprights. The uprights always came out looking awesome.
