In yet another demonstration that Boston drivers really are the worst, the driver of this Toyota Tacoma attempted a recreation of Alan Shepard's sub-orbital space flight by launching himself off Interstate 93 near the Zakim bridge this morning.

I've added a more appropriate soundtrack to this version of the video.
Maybe Doug DeMuro will believe us now.

I have a huge fear of getting in an accident on that bridge and doing that very same thing. looks like i'll be taking another route from now on. damn that guys lucky to be alive. Some parts of that bridge are pretty damn high

He was drunk and drove right toward it. No brake lights until he's already in the air, and a lot of good they'll do then. The situation is even worse right now with the huge snowbanks, which make great launch ramps. Just this past Saturday I saw a car on the wrong side of one, fortunately on flat ground.

Sorry to be That Guy, but the rocket you pictured was not sub-orbital, the Mercury-Atlas was a true orbital vehicle. It was the Mercury-Redstones, such as the one in this picture carrying Alan Shepard, that flew sub-orbital flights. I watched that shot on the black-n-white teevee, when I was seven years old.

Darn it, you're right! Being a space buff myself, I should've recognized it immediately, despite this pic coming up in a Google search specifically for "Mercury Redstone."
