If all the things that confine you to a certain place (job, family, felony conviction) weren't a factor, where would you want to live and why? No additional homes allowed, even if you already have one. You are allowed to travel as much as you like though. I'm going to restrict this to the US just because, although if you have an international answer feel free to include it in a comment with a US answer.
My answer: I'd like to live in a fairly secluded house on Michigan's west coast. Maybe a few neighbors, but at least a mile away or so. Closeish to a little town, but far enough away for some privacy. I don't really have a specific town in mind, but further North than Holland and not too near all the touristy stuff by Traverse City.
Why? I love my home state, I love the water, and Lake Michigan has some top notch beaches. Far away from stuff so I don't have to put up with other people's crap! This would probably take some lucky breaks on my part, but I'd be perfectly content living on a smaller inland lake.
Before I moved away I never realized how much I liked Michigan and living in a "boring small town", but I guess you have to have some distance from something to really appreciate it. What about you Oppo?

Anywhere with a car dealership for me to work at and lots of stores within walking distance that sell diecast cars.
Oh, and a Wendy's that's a short walk from the dealership at lunch time. :D

Every time I visit the PNW I'm legitimately tempted to move there because holy fuck is it gorgeous. The only real downside is it doesn't have the same rally saturation as the northeast. Still might do it at some point.

so for me...probably texas or cali. cali is tempting becuse lane splitting...but texas is much free-r on guns, and the land is cheaper there too.
but cali also has nice roads. UGH

As stupid as it sounds, probably my home area in North Alabama. It's right next to the mountains, it's only a few hours to the beach, it is within 200 miles of a couple of major cities, it is home to two pretty famous race tracks, there are amazing back roads to eat miles on, the weather is alright(sans 'Naders), and while the people aren't the most open minded, they are for the most part friendly as fuck in person. Also, no shitty sauce soaked barbecue to be found.

I really love where I am right now (Bucks/Montgomery County PA) We get somewhat of a bad wrap for being relatively wealthy, but it really is one of the best places. Lots of shopping, restaurants, about 45 minutes from Philadelphia. About 25-30 min to King of Prussia, home of the King of Prussia mall, one of the largest in the US.

But, if I can go outside the US? New Zealand. All of it. Except Auckland. (Sorry Auckland.)

I lived in Hawaii a long time, the saddle road is dangerous with the drunks. My family went to the big island in the 1800's, they owned the Hilo Mercantile Co. Its a pretty wild place, the high country looks like Ireland, Kona is like land of the lost and Hilo is wet.

San Diego.
I'm in the Bay Area now (have been my whole life) and while it'a nice area, I just got tired of the high cost of living, congestion, and smugness. I still love California, though, and you can't beat San Diego weather, the laid-back vibe, and beaches.
Unfortunately, there isn't a ton of industry there outside of the Navy and bio-pharmaceuticals.
Moving to SD is a very real and current goal of mine, but if/when I find a good work opportunity there, it would significantly hinder future job options moving forward.

Funny enough, I couldn't wait to leave after I graduated. Unlike others that wished it, I did. Living in Florida made me miss everything I hated. The complete silence, having to make your own fun, nature, the people, tornados, etc. Florida is so boring to me. It's nothing but subdivisions and swamps if you aren't on the beach. And the weather is predictable as fuck. It's going to be hot. Then winter comes and it gets below 70, and everyone starts to die off because "I'm frozen to me Walmart scooter" or "It's too cold to go to McDonalds". Alabama weather: Winter- 16 and snowing on Monday, 75 on Tuesday. Spring- Snow on Tuesday, 82 and 9 EF5 tornados on Wednesday. Summer- 104 and dry as fuck. Fall- repeat Spring.

I love New York, but after a few years of living here, I'm starting to see it's ugly side. Owning a car here will always be a burden, the apartments are all too expensive, I'd probably make more money as an architect in Cleveland, there's too many people, the pizza really isn't that great, and so on...
I think most of my reasoning though is that I see Cleveland as my home, and over the past few years there's been a ton of new improvement in and around the city.

I think that artisanal hipster crap is creeping up in Oregon now, of course SF still has plenty, Marin is kind of a weird place, but good. Our Cars and Coffee reflects it, we have old guys with rare classics to younger guys with almost anything you can think of Asian, Euro or Mercan. The guy with a 330 Ferrari and a Gullwing with original white paint works on his own cars, its great. If could live anywhere I might live in New Zealand, its fucking spectacular and less people. People, real estate and everything here can get out of control, but Marin still has vast open spaces where you don't see many people.

I chose Lockhart, TX. Several reasons for this decision come to mind. #1 with a bullet is 99.9% NO SNOW! I am so tired of these Midwest winters. Second is its 20 miles from COTA, out in the country where its much cheaper to buy land than Austin. 6th st in Austin is less than 30 miles. Its 72 miles to Lackland AFB, where I can jump on a military transport to Hawaii or Germany for the cost of a $10 box lunch (box lunch included). Its less than 100 miles to the Texas Mile where I race annually. Its 150 miles to my favorite relatives in Houston and the Houston .Half Mile. Two hours to the beach. What more would I need.

My family came from Europe to Hawaii, they had a house in SF around the corner from Alamo Square, the house survived the earthquake, still there. When a woman was pregnant they were sent to SF to have the baby and therefore American. My grandparents lived on Chestnut and then moved to Marin in the 50's. I like Noe Valley, nice area with backyards, seems quiet. Whatever is above the Castro is cool, small roads up there like Marin, you forget you're in the city. I met a guy up there with a Citroen DS Safari wagon, seems like cool people live there.

I'd probably stay where I am, which is Greenville, SC. If I did move, it'd be a little bit north, towards the Traveler's Rest/Marietta area, which is a tiny bit closer to the mountains, but still only a short drive to the city. Even if I stayed put, I love it here. There's zero vehicle inspections and lenient registration laws, which help foster a strong car culture (our local Cars and Coffee routinely gets 600+ cars each month). It's a wonderful city in its own rite and living here means I'm only a quick drive up into some of the best driving roads the Appalachians have to offer. A little bit of a longer drive gets me to both Road Atlanta and Charlotte Motor Speedway, not to mention Tail of the Dragon and the Asheville area. It's just a really good region for gearheads in general.

I have, many, many times. I applied to the JET Programme in college, just because I was something of a Japanophile, like many young people may age. I wasn't the worst example of it, but nor was I looking for just a resume builder (I often find JETs/ALTs come in three groups: 1) anime/manga fans and Japanophiles 2) those who wish to continue their college lifestyle and have heard that they can kind of do this overseas 3) overachievers who want to pad their resume with something which is unusual compared to the general population; I fell into group 1, but not egregiously so).
I got waitlisted. I went into politics, never really cared I never heard an answer back. I then found out that politics as an intern sucks and pays nothing. I had 30K in loans and a 240HP late model BMW 3-series I could not afford. Japan remained an unlikely possibility. I moved to Korea. Quick money, easy job (sorta group 2), but my bosses were assholes, the worst, misogynistic, racist, homophobic, and STEALING FROM ME (I was informed by the Korean IRS). I hated it. It did pay very well, my loans were gone quickly. I sent almost everything home. I sold the BMW. Six months later I got that unlikely call: "Hey do you still want to move to Kyoto?"
I went. Aside from grad school back in Texas while maintaining my Japanese residency, I have never looked back.

Most of my other choices involve national parks or epic roadways and I'm not so sure that's legal, but I could dig having a motor home or a houseboat.
Internationally? I liked the South of France. I liked Budapest (living in Σbuda felt like stepping into the past) and I'd live there again if I could keep my salary. I'd live in Copenhagen to make my girlfriend happy.

Madison, WI No question about it. I lived there for 5 years and it was great. Southern Wisconsin is an absolutely beautiful place to live and Madison is no exception. Trees and green spaces everywhere. Madison is a medium/small city, but with both the state government and UW there it has nearly everything you want from a much larger city with very little of the bad parts. After 4 years in southwest Oklahoma, I am very, very excited to be moving back later this year.
This is downtown Madison. Did I mention that it's the only city in the world built on an isthmus?

After three years of school in central Oklahoma, I'm pretty much looking forward to moving to anywhere else haha. Madison seems nice though.

I will say that sledding down my driveway in Grant Creek as a kid and ending up going all the way down it, over the road, and all the way down my neighbor's driveway to my neighbor's front porch was one of my greatest kid experiences ever. I also loved that my Dad let me ride Christmas trees down the mountain in winter. It's a pity that area's more developed now but that's a beautiful state.

My parents live in old town Alexandria, and it has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the US. The National Mall is amazing.
That said, DC is such a horrible place to drive - would never want to live there! The potholes, the beltway, the idiotic pedestrians, ughhh!!!

Apart from teenage indiscretion getting myself and two of my best friends kicked off of the campus of one of your local colleges (I bet you can guess which one) I've had nothing but great experiences there as well. One of my favorite places in your state.

I'd love to live in Colorado. The mountains mean I'd be able to do all of the things I love to do outside: canyon/mountainous driving, mountain biking and snowboarding. I also love to go boating so I'd find some water, too.

Yeah, I really like the idea of living someplace where the grass actually turns green in summer instead of greenish brown.

Its nice there but traffic into there can be murder on nice warm weekends thanks to the city! Expensive as hell too, but our question in in fantasy world I guess. There is a lot for sale near Tam Junction, the turn SF people use to get to Stinson Beach. Its like gridlock on that road when they come, so not sure about that.

One of my runner up choices. Great town. Great people.

I feel pretty fortunate to already be living where I want, but I suppose if money was no object, give me a 40 acre ranch in one of the high mountain valleys, preferably 15 minutes from a ski area.

I sensed a disturbance in the Force: that the great Republic of Texas was being disparaged. I cannot let this stand. I cannot abide such heresy.
Texas is the bestest. Texas forever! Amen. ^_^

I already live in heaven, so my answer is easy. The great Republic of Texas, of course.
