That's bizarre, I've watched races til the end regardless of when my car finished. I don't think anyone gained position on the final lap so could you just get the results from right before you finished? Figure I'll throw them up there and correct if need be.

I'm hoping things are a bit more competitive in the 550's this week, if I can make it. I learned that hard way that cornering ability means next to nothing when you get your doors blown off on the straight-away by some high PI car.
SVTyler

02/24/2015 at 02:40 | 0 |
It hasn't been that bad, has it? Unfortunately having dudes with high-PI cars is kind of the only way we can get them up to speed and be competitive (unless you feel like completely neutering your own car instead). It sucks for the faster people and I don't like it any more than you do (especially since I'm dialing my car back so far) but that's just how these series will work.

Ahem.
I was getting my doors blown off on every straight and managed to come in 2nd. Cornering ability and consistently can work well if you race smart and wait for the guys ahead to screw up.

I had a few key misshaps. I avoided that cluster going in to turn 1 on the first or second lap, and ended up in 3rd, only to up in the sticky grass trying to avoid an un-instigated spin out in front of me. I just couldn't claw my way back. It didn't help that I went 2 wheeling around the turn before the straight far too many times. I did feel like I was driving a car in a different league though. Many kudos to you for hangin' in there.

02/24/2015 at 18:35 | 0 |
No no not at all. I've only been in 3 races so far and other than this last one, they all felt pretty evenly matched and competitve. I think something about the nature of Road Atlanta and the B450's wasn't an environment that was conducive to making up ground. I have no idea how you stay in the game with such a low PI car. I've been trying to build the cars so that a perfect lap results in the desired time, and maybe I should just back off that a little and make that target time easier to attain.

Points standings are separate for each series:
And yeah, if you could try and do something about your Internet that'd be awesome. If not you're still fine to race with us obviously, only thing is we're having two new people this week so the field will be even more crowded if you can make it.
SVTyler

02/24/2015 at 19:26 | 0 |
Yeah, problem with long tracks like Road Atlanta is that the PI difference is exaggerated by the straights. Theoretically if everyone laps the same times then it should be a pretty close race regardless, but I do know it's frustrating at times (especially for people like me and RoboRed who are on non-race compound so we're getting killed on the straights and the corners).
Like Desu said these races favor the consistency more than anything (A550 especially since they're so long), which is how dudes like me and RoboRed and camaroboy68ss invariably end up in the top 5 every week. If you race smart and clean there's no reason you shouldn't be competing for a spot on the podium every week, which is why I emphasize the practice aspect so much; besides making your lap times faster overall you become more used to the track and thus more consistent.

I LOVED watching the replay and seeing your car bicycle around that corner. There were so many times I couldn't believe how high of a tip angle you achieved without flipping. It was hilarious.
Anyways, my strategy is generally to hang back and race super conservative for the first couple of laps, as tires will be cold and there
will
be accidents and wrecks. Use those first two laps to position yourself in such a way to take advantage of the chaos in front of you. If you watch the replay from my car's point of view, you can see me consciously doing exactly that.
As for the car itself, I could lend a hand with tuning it for you, if you'd like. Be aware, though, I always favor handling over power, so it might not totally alleviate the straight line speed issue.

02/24/2015 at 19:50 | 0 |
I definitely haven't logged the massive amount of hours in the game that some in the club have, but I've put up pretty decent showings in the races I've been a part of. Consistency is definitely the way to end up in the top 5, but even my cleanest lines were perilous considering the damg rumble strips at Road Atlanta, and small short wheel-base TwoFive cars meant doing the two wheel dance far too often, and even if you didn't roll, it' probably cost a whole second to recover from.
We did have pretty similar lap times, but there must have been 25 seconds between the first place finisher and the last. I definitely agree that Road Atlanta can highlight certain strengths and weaknesses. It's hard to find areas at Road Atlanta to shave seconds off the lap. There's a right way, and wrong way at this track it seems, not much to do differently that's going to actually save time other than perfecting your lines.
TopSirloin
> Desu-San-Desu
02/24/2015 at 20:01 | 1 |
I cannot believe I didn't roll. I'd like to watch that replay, I had probably 5 or 6 times I was damn close. Those really killed my times.
I think that conservative approach is definitely a good one to take if you can stay clean and not make mistakes. I was able to put down a top-5 lap time but was still 15 or 20 seconds off the leader it felt like.
As far as tuning goes, I'm experimenting and feeling my way through what's what. With the Nova, I was able to take something that was fast enough, and make it something that seemed to out-handle much of what was infront of me. I tried the same approach with the Cortina.. Light, good standard handling that could be polished up a lot, and good balance.. it just wan't in the same league as far as power is concerned as some other examples were. I really need to get to one of the Friday night practices to get an idea of the approach everyone is taking. I've got the 70' Boss Mustang feeling pretty dialed in. I don't like the way it handles stock, but tweaking the camber a few degrees and some adjustments with spring rate have made a noticeable difference for once.
When it comes down to it at Road Atlanta, I think I'd rather be fast in the straights and sloppy in the corners than vice versa.
SVTyler

02/24/2015 at 20:32 | 0 |
Imo the Two-Five cars take more skill to drive quickly than the A550 cars, like you mentioned any screwup is magnified because of how damn slow those things are, especially at Road Atlanta with all the straights.
Irrespective of the multiple Orloves some people had last race I'm happy with the overall finishing times; as far as I'm concerned everyone has an equal chance to win the race, it's entirely up to the drivers to capitalize on the advantages they've been given. If you're racing in a car with 50+ more PI points than another guy and you still finish behind him it's not on him to slow down.
TopSirloin
> SVTyler
02/24/2015 at 20:52 | 0 |
I totally agree. It's impressive that you're able to continue to be competitive with the handicaps you've given yourself. I really didn't feel like skill could do that much for you. I thought I was about average, I can hit the target times pretty consistently, and therefor wanted to keep myself right at the PI cap, but if guys like you and Robo are finishing ahead of me maybe I should give myself a little more room, I'd be worried about going too far past the max lap time.. Eh, it'll figure itself out. I'm still the newbie in the group.
SVTyler
> TopSirloin
02/24/2015 at 21:31 | 0 |
Thanks, that's what happens when you put 400+ hours of driving into Fourza, eventually you find found the quickest way around every track in the game. Skill matters to an extent but again consistency remains king: last week notwithstanding, you'll notice the top guys never crash or go off-course in addition to being the fastest dudes on the track anyways. Combine that with a bit of an aggressive driving style (I know I'm guilty) and that's how those races shake out with people far out in front.
Not sure what everyone else does but every weekend my car is built to within .1 or 2 seconds of the target time (as evidenced by the pics I post when I remember to take them) and I lap at least 15 times before deciding on the final PI to make sure I don't have a Senna at Monaco lap and have to rebuild the car. Still finish a second or two fast per lap, but in theory if everyone sets their lap times similarly everyone should be a second or two fast, not two or three like some people (not going to name names but I'm vaguely annoyed by a few racers in the lobby who seem to always be lapping faster than everyone else every week).
Keep doing what you're doing and don't try to compensate, just practice. It'd be a terrible combo of a slippery slope and arms race; you set your car slightly faster, someone else sets their car slightly faster to combat you, ad infinitum until we're all at 600PI and the racing isn't any closer. The hands-off way I run this series leaves the onus of responsibility on the participants to build fair cars and if they don't, not much we can do about it besides take a few points off (which I've had to do a few times).

Yeah it's really up to you guys to make the racing even, which in turns makes it actually enjoyable. It's nice to win, sure, but it's way more fun to actually race someone for 40+ minutes instead of just hot-lapping, which is what happened last series. If everyone shares that same idea we shouldn't have any problems.

I'm on sport tires as well and it's manageable; you just slide around a bit more than normal but since you're probably a bunch faster than everyone else in the corners it's not really detrimental to overall competitiveness, if anything you're still a bit faster than everyone else in the corners.
Normally I host a practice on Friday nights but I have exams next week so I might miss it this time around. Could make a post anyways and just have you guys organize yourselves, with the club screen it's pretty easy to do.

Ok. I don't know what their reactions were at the time, but looking at the replay, Tareim was in the lead going into the final chicane at the end of the long straight. He botched the right-hand exit a little and was slower exiting it, but hung to the right. Kampf came through with a good line and good speed, but despite having plenty of room to the left, ran into Tareim's rear bump, on the left corner. It was a hard hit and Tareim spun out immediately. If Tareim's cool with it, then whatever, but I feel it at least merits a review.

I remember that, and I apologized. I did not contact him on purpose. I hit my apexes perfectly and had a lot of speed built up but, I could not stop in time and I ended up into him.

Think you might be too but I'll check anyways.
