Everybody (and their mom) expects a true top of the range S-Class rival from Cadillac. Think El Miraj, but then with four doors. Hmmmm....salivating already? Because I might have some bad news for you. Check out this convo that Johan de Nysschen has with @BuzzKillington.

Kinja'd!!!

There seems to be a contradiction of sorts in his statement. De Nysschen very clearly states that that the CT6 will be the end all be all Caddy. But his very next sentence states that Cadillac is already working on something with a little bit more grandeur. As in a S class grandeur? Is De Nysschen just hinting on a convertible CT6?

What do you Caddy wisperers think?

PLOT TWIST!!! Caddy is getting the mid-engine Corvette with a wreath and crest instead of the bowtie and Chevy is going to keep their F/R layout.

^Probably unlikely, but if the CT6 is going to be the flagship then Cadillac is probably going to make a 911/AMG GT/F-Type fighter. The Corvette (as much as everyone wants it to) is only a competitor to those when it's on a track or from stoplight to stoplight. Doesn't change the fact that it's built by Chevy and plumbers drive it.

I disagree slightly with your assessment.

I read "the CT6 will be the top of our range" meaning for the moment, and that there is something in the works (a possible convertible) that will be the progression forward.

I'd have exactly 0 things to bitch about if I could afford a C7 as a plumber.

The CT6 is the range-topper FOR NOW. Something else is coming down the pipes, but they aren't sure which pipe yet, so to speak.

But that's just my opinion.

Yeah, they've already publicly stated that there will be a CT8. I don't know why he says CT6 will be the flagship.

With the plan, de Nysschen will grow Cadillac's product portfolio from five models to 10. He said the company has "just signed off on," a new range-topping luxury sedan called "CT8 or CT9" that will compete with long-wheelbase versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-series. The impending CT6 will also do battle with the S-Class and 7-series, however the CT8/9 may offer more luxury features and have a variety of seating layouts available, like the reclining 2-seat option on the S-Class, for example.

It's a weird sort of explanation he's got there.

Good one. However, does that mean that a true S Class competitor is already being designed? Thats what I´m interested in. Eh...time will tell.

I'm REALLY dissapointed in him. I don't think he's well suited to run caddy at all. Seems to me he doesn't care about Cadillac at all. I just hope he leaves quickly like he did infiniti before his "plans" are permanent.

Why are you dissappointed in him? I´m not really familiar with the man. Or don´t you like the course Caddillac is headed in general ? With it the lagging sales of the new sedans and all...

I don't like the direction he's taking. I don't think he gives a shit about Cadillac at all. Like it or not, their history is arguably the most important part of their identity, and he seems to be disregarding all that to try and make Cadillac Audi, but from America. Before someone jumps in and says "but that's what sells!!!!" No, it doesn't. The generation deVille I have was the best selling luxury sedan in America when it was new, and now sales on Cadillacs seem to be dwindling. Why? He's ignoring what they're all about. Messing with a formula that has helped a brand survive and prosper 113 years. Sure, they've almost gone under once or twice, but if you look at it, it's whenever they try doing something new that they falter. Cadillac buyers will always buy Cadillacs. Not Audis, not BMWs, not Infinitis or Lexuses, no, we don't want those. We want Cadillacs. Cadillacs need to make a statement, not excuses.

Yes, exactly what Rolland said. Cadillac was a type of car, not just a marque. They lost their way when they started hallucinating that the Europeans made better cars and Cadillac had to "catch up."

Of course, I think that the luxury car is dead and the market is full of leather coated sports cars (seriously, drive a real Cadillac if you ever get the chance.)

What Cadillac is doing is an investment in the future. The Cadillac of yesterday wouldnt sell tomorrow, not in the reputation driven society that we live in now. The DeVille you have may have been the best selling car in America at the time, but what was the msrp, the profit margin, the incentives? They probably werent very good, especially when compared to the Germans I'd bet. While Cadillac buyers always bought Cadillacs that worked when the had a good reputation, there reputation was faltering to being a car only old people want. Which isnt good for the long term.

Cadillac would rather hook someone at 30 than 60, its purely business.

Cadillac buyers will always buy Cadillacs.

Nope, the 80s killed that. There was basically a dearth of real Cadillac products from the oil crisis until the Northstar came along. During that time all of the entry level buyers shifted to the German brands. When Caddy started putting things back out that were worthy of the name the only folks that bought were the stalwarts and the previous owners. Try as they might, you just can't people back into thinking a luxury brand is a nicely appointed interior on a floaty large platform. The XTS, which is the closest you get to a classic Caddy has 60+% of its sales to folks older than 65. That's unsustainable. You have to get younger buyers to survive. Younger buyers (with extremely few exceptions) do not want a modern interpretation of old American luxury.

"Cadillacs of yesterday wouldn't sell tomorrow."

Yeah that's why their new small sports sedans are flying off lots to the point where there's a waiting list and their biggest, most vulgar and showy vehicle is selling so poorly......

....oh, wait.

See: Escalade sales v. The rest of the lineup. The XTS isn't a true interpretation of traditional Cadillacs. The escalade is. And escalade sales is boomin' while the rest of the lineup struggles.

A utility vehicle in drag is the true interpretation of traditional Cadillacs? In what world? The Suburban was around when Caddy was putting out classic Coupe deVilles. Those drivers would not have been caught dead in a leather swabbed truck.

Same year. You can throw as much leather or chrome on that 'burb as you want and it wouldn't convince the dude in his tux and his lady in her formal gown that it was a traditional Cadillac.

Because, y'know, EVERYONE sees new SUVs as utility vehicles.

GM's biggest passenger vehicle platform with all their goodies thrown on top?

Sounds like a Cadillac to me.

Sorry, none of that was directed at you specifically. I drive a '97 DeVille myself. The thing is, Cadillac's current offerings (along with every other "luxury" marque) have small interiors and stiff suspension. At some point performance became more important than comfort.

Ill rephrase for you, none of the Cadillac sedans of yesterday would sell tomorrow.

Even then though, the Escalade isnt really comparable to many any of the other cars they used to make anyways.
