Ok, the situation here sucks, I know this poor guy from around town, actually a good guy, and it is a bad deal. He parked, weather got warm, ice dam falls off a building and screws up his Cavalier. Not insured for this occurrence, he is out of luck, supposedly the building owners insurance wont cover either. I would be on the horn with a lawyer because the building owner or his insurance is liable I can imagine. But no, lets set up a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! page for 5 grand so this guy doesn't have to walk less than a mile to work (all on city streets). Just getting out of hand. And it looks like all it needs is some glass. That car damn sure wasn't worth 2 grand in the first place.

So what's the deal? Maine only requires liability on a car? Comprehensive is so goddamn cheap to put on a car of that vintage and, uh, value. Winter sucks - the dude should man up and just get a pair of yaktraks - less chance of dying in a slip and fall than driving a Cadavalier in this climate.

If you can't afford to replace your car you should have comprehensive.

Anyhow, he's got a job...any buy here pay here place will get him in a vehicle. Yeah, the interest will suck. Yeah, he may have to make weekly payments or have the car be disabled. So what?

E-begging is such a weird phenomenon. I can't imagine someone going to a town hall or the VFW or something handing out fliers asking for a free car in the pre-internet days and being taken seriously.

It probably falls under some Act Of God clause. At least when a tree at our townhouse fell on our CR-V during a storm, that's what they called it.

The townhouse property would not pay for any damages because the tree was not known to be dead, or in need of removal. No one else had ever complained (although it constantly dropped twigs and largish sticks on the three parking spots it covered) about it, so when the wind took a huge chunk of it off and slammed it on the roof and hood of our car, we had to pay out of pocket for the deductible, and watch our rates climb.

'Twas a good decision to park the P71 in the one garage space we had that night though..... liability insurance wouldn't have covered SHIT on that car

Gofundme is weird for this case. He can take mass transit for a short while and save up for another car. I may sound like a grandpa but he lives in a city where busses aren't hard to find.

A buddy of mine just sent me a picture yesterday...a crew was clearing snow off a 4 story building in the North End and dumped all of it onto his car. Every window was blown in and the car was filled with snow. Wonder what will happen with insurance or that crew....

Looks like the roof got tweaked, too, not just the windshield. So that'd need to be repaired, as well. But my question is, why TF did he leave his bike rack mounted on the trunk? Takes 15 seconds to pop it off and toss it inside the trunk, especially if you don't fold it up. That's just all kinds of lazy. I don't live in snow country and even my bike rack is snugly inside my trunk because winter rain. (And also so it won't get stolen).

And yeah, that Cavalier is not worth $2K. Even $1,500 would be generous.

Weird, that's the opposite of how my two tree damage claims played out. In one case it was a healthy tree and the owner's insurance paid since it was reasonably maintained and out of control of the owner. In the other it was a dead tree and the insurance refused to pay saying that liability fell to the owner since they should have removed it (had to have my insurance cover that one.)

It's so weird around here. It used to be, when like the local softball team or whatever wanted to raise money to go to an out of state tournament they'd sell something or hold a car wash or something. Now they just set up a page and send out an email blast to donate. "Send the XYZ All-stars to Nationals".

Even if I like the kids, and even if whatever they would have sold would have been crap, I still feel like I'd be a chump donating to an email. The whole point of fundraisers was to teach some work ethic and that 'effort=rewards'. E-begging just sends a poor message IMO. It's like instead of prepping the kids for life incrementally they're just being insulated until something big smashes them over the head.

yeah at least give me some candy. This is an interesting angle on it for sure. As a kid we worked for it. We wanted to go on a music department trip, we were selling stuff to fund it or having a bake sale.

I mean dont get me wrong, everyone wants something for nothing, but teaching people to be accountable and to work for stuff is a noble endeavor

I read that is what they are claiming. But in this reasoning, if you see the ice, it looks dangerous above a sidewalk as highly traveled as that one, you should remove it or be liable. Hell in this town if you dont take care of your sidewalk and someone slips on it, you are liable, and can be fined
