They are like cats from my experience, most of them ignore me when I'm in Japan. The local Lawson's store, where I stay always has one out front and he is a no fucks given dog. They are cute, the Akitas look like that as puppies too, I think they are all related.

Yeah, I like laid back dogs. One's that aren't jumping all over a visitor or going crazy when they see another dog.

Nice! I feel like those Shibas go either way. A guy in my neighborhood has two that I see on a regular basis walking my dog. The younger one is chill as fuck. The older one on the other hand, just wants to see the world burn.

Obligatory picture of my own dog (Boxer/Lab mix), because as a dog owner I must show pictures at any opportunity. I think parents of young children have the same compulsion...

It's all in the training. A well-trained dog won't jump on anyone or react to other dogs regardless of breed. Source: currently training a very "mellow" dog from a very "mellow" breed to not freak out when she sees another dog. Been at it for the better part of a year now with varying results but slowly getting better. She was completely untrained when we got her and then got attacked by a loose dog shortly after, and that was the catalyst that started her issues.

From what I hear doges can be rather stubborn to train and take a lot of effort on the owners' part.

I have a Boxer/Lab mix as well, and some pit was thrown in there along the way.

You must know never buy dogs, never support horrible greedy puppy mills. With that out of the way, I'm fostering a very chill dog for the Illinois Alaskan Malamute Rescue Assoc. Rin is 4 or 5 years old. Very very sweet delicate flower of a dog. She's a Malamute so the sweet delicate business has a limit but she gets along with most dogs and cats too. She needs a permanent home!

Yeah, there's a couple on my Facebook that announce when people "reserve" a puppy with them. I think they have the next 2-3 litters spoken for and recently consulted someone that told them they could breed their Labradoodles twice a year....

You would need much wagon to transport such doge.

This photo made me laugh out loud. He seems more upset that you're taking a picture than he is about getting a bath.

That's too bad. I know there are very reasonable people dedicated to researching genetics and heredity and interested in furthering whatever breed and they breed responsibly and respecful of their dogs. I don't know much breeding dogs (I'm the opposite - I try to help the people who work to rescue those breeders expensive "products for sale" so they don't die in a shelter) - but it seems to me that breeding your Labradoodles twice a year puts one in the category of greedy scum who want as much money as possible out of their dogs. And of course the whole concept of "Labradoodles" is pandering to the ignorant who wouldn't want to rescue a Lab-poodle mix from the pound.

oh well, let's not get started. That Shiba IS the cutest. You have much will power, self control, and strong in the force for not taking it.

How would a dog like this do as an outdoor dog? I imagine they'd do pretty well with winter. It would have a garage with a bed in it, but otherwise outside and free to roam. Would it run away? The other dog we have (a german shepherd mix) only comes inside when it is really really cold so that she can eat without her food freezing. I'm trying to figure out what breeds I should be looking for that would do well in this situation.

You better believe these guys do well in winter. Alaskan Malamute after all. Her relatives are pulling sleds down to -40 degrees. Generally, one should not leave dogs outside (theft by the animal dealers who supply research universities) but I live in a neighborhood that is quite secure and she's been outside all winter when I'm at work (one day's high was 3 deg) with an in

Kinja'd!!!

sulated dog house, heated water.

The Malamutes I've had were not escapers and didn't (most of the time) escape my 4 foot fence and could be walked off leash. But the breed description for sled dogs is that they are runners, they are never to be trusted off leash. It says they will run for miles before bothering to stop and see where the hell they are. So they have to fenced. The breed descriptions sometimes calls for minimum 6 ft fences dug 3 feet underground and tilted in 3 feet at the top, they can be such escapers. Rin is not one of those.

And all of my Malamutes have wanted to be inside on a regular basis because they want to be with their human pack. Definitely do the research. Malamutes are generally known to be more challenging to own, especially when introducing them to other dogs and when they start adding up to a pack. (Rin is so easy, she doesn't fit any of those Malamute descriptions).

Oh, if you mean as a permanent outside dog, most Malamutes are not going to do well. They're very people oriented and want to socialize and hang with their human pack. That's typical for most dogs, they need to be inside with their people. If not, why bother having a dog?

Sounds like a Malamute isn't right for my situation. I wouldn't have worry about a dog getting stolen (this is pretty seriously in the middle of nowhere) but there is no fenced yard. I keep running into this problem where all the dogs I like are runners. I would like to be able to bring a dog in the house, but we're staying with my boyfriend's grandparents who don't allow dogs in the house, although they always have at least one dog. His grandfather goes out in the garage and hangs out with the dog while tinkering on little projects. Their dog Betty used to have another dog (some kind of corgi mix) as a companion, but he died and she's pretty sad about it. I don't know if getting another dog at this point is even a good idea. Betty is about 10 and I wouldn't want a younger dog to wear her out. She does seem to be getting around better now that the other dog is gone and she can move at her own pace.

Ultimately I would love to have a dog that I can take to work with me at the shop, but that would be ok with sleeping in the garage. Once I figure out what kind of dog would do well in that situation then I can try to find one at a rescue. Thanks for your advice!

You're welcome. Malamutes aren't right for many people. Although anyone looking at Rin, hey! hey! she's a really easy dog. Mals tend to be independent, like cats. They've all wanted to come into the shop when I go in. They want to see what I'm doing and check everything out. They then decide I'm not doing anything interesting and they actually have better things to do with their time outside. They're not great shop dogs. They're also usually horrible watch dogs, they like people so much.

And again, those breed descriptions are generic. All dogs are individuals. I fostered one Malamute who was velcro with his owner. She didn't have a fenced yard and he wouldn't wander off.

Good luck!
