it was okay, bought just as a flip. Someone died and the daughter wanted some money. Held down one corner of the driveway nicely for a while (back when I was big pimpin)

This brings one thing to mind...Landau. Step dad, Monte Carlo, Landau, powder blue.

I knew a girl that looked pretty good in a vinyl top but she looked better without it.

Swanky. Particularly the wheels and rubber.

The best ones IMO look like actual convertible tops. People would mistake my 1968 Mustang for a convertible if not looking closely (it was like this, but with white roof). Fun fact about the Superbird, the vinyl roof was a cheap way to cover up the bondo from putting in a different backlight, for the Daytona they spent more time / effort.

I was actually surprised some months back to find out that the 1st gen Mustang was offered with a vinyl roof from inception - apparently it's very easy to tell when the original top is still in place due to where the top material seam lines are and whether the body seams have been leaded (if damaged). Certainly a good pick for a notchback, and since there are so many out there, a hint of individuality doesn't hurt. I assume it cuts down a little bit on the Falcon/Mustang body squeak and creak?

I don't know if the roof helps with squeaking or not, most of the squeaking noises would come from the ball joints which did not have grease fittings from the factory and dried out after a number of years; putting in grease fittings and grease helped with that. Almost every car had to have a vinyl roof option in the 1960s & 70s, even if it messed up the lines of the car. The ones with the gap and paint between the top and the windows / drip rails drive me crazy. Three of the weirdest ones were on the Javelin, which came with three versions, one where the top extended down the C-pillar / buttress, one where it only covered the back half of the roof and buttress, and one where it looked like (but wasn't) a T-top, before T-tops were a thing. It's like the designer was told "put some vinyl on it, use your imagination" and he did. While under the influence of something. The pseudo T-top at least complements the stripe design, but the pseudo landau roof is just bizarre.

All of these are amazing. A couple of manufacturers were early adopters on the general idea of the vinyl top, but it seems to have waited until the mid-60s to really take hold - witness the first and second gen Falcons not having any, but Mustangs from year one. I know with some squeak and creak in the first gens the guilty party was the body, but I was aware of the suspension issues as well. With the 1st gen Mustang, they swapped the brass sleeve upper A-arm design from the Falcon for a version without, they swapped to non-greasable ball joints (from the greasable ones on the Falcon), and the existing squeak from the rubber on the shock, the lower control arm, the track rod, and the swaybar are already a recipe for some really annoying sounds. Not the *same* annoying sounds as the twisting longitudinal body flex noise on a Falcon wagon, but still.
