all things being equal, assuming both are in full working order and in need of no major repairs, which do you drive away in (re: money doesn't matter)?

As a DD: The FR-S
As anything else: The e30. A good one of those is appreciating in value and its probably gonna continue.

Seeing as I already own an FR-S, I'll take the E30. No sense in owning two 86's.
Disregarding that, I'd probably go FR-S. I love a good E30, but the FR-S works too well as a daily. It's comfortable, relatively quiet while putting around town, gets great gas mileage, and has all the fun creature comforts and toys.

At this rate, the E30. It'll be worth a ton on this site alone.

no m3, just any other e30 of your choice that isn't a "rare" model.

Probably FR-S.
I have a feeling e30 replacement parts would be more expensive than the FRS. FRS probably has better brakes too.

I was faced with this very same choice last year. I was going to test drive an frs, but the dealer didn't have one available. So I drove a 2014 Miata. One of the biggest dissapointments ever. The dealer wanted....get this, $48,000!!! So the money I had for a new car instead was used to restore all the mechanical and electrical on my E21, and the day I got my E21 back, I purchased a very good condition E30. Much happier with 2 BMWs than 1 Toyota.

Holy hell, 48k for a miata that's about to be last generation? First of all... $48,000 for a miata period just defeats the purpose, but the fact that it's not even the one anyone is going to want is insane.

can't say for sure on brakes, but e30 parts are cheap. It gets expensive when you start talking engine/tranny trouble.

$48K? What country do you live in? If it was anywhere in North America that had better have been the price for 2 cars.

Perhaps youre right.
I guess I was thinking more of the labor costs on a BMW. I don't work on my cars so that's always a factor for me.

I'm assuming you live outside the US, because here a fully-loaded flippy hard top Miata stickers at $34k.

Eh, I mean it depends on what shop you take it to. The Euro shop I hit up is no more than any other.

I'm pretty sure we can make that happen with an e30.

I mean you could swap an FA20 with UEL's into an E30, but you'd end up spending more money.

Assuming both are in showroom shape, the E30 of course.

I mean..... I guess that FR-S sounds nice or whatever but....
EDIT> Also, forgive the stance and music, it's just the first example I found. Tell you what, just swap an LS in the FR-S and pick either :)

Sound, it isn't an overplayed swap, etc.

$48000. I wish I was lying. Salse guy said it was a GP edition, with better suspension and big brembos. It was used, had 30,000 Kms and stickered for 56k. I told the guy he was out of his mind, and reminded him it was a miata lol. Drove it anyway because Miata. I went to a Toyota dealer earlier that day, and inquired about an frs. You could imagine my bewilderment when sales guy offers me a automatic yaris instead.

The sound, as in the distinct lack of the "boxer" sound the FA20 produces? I don't think the LS swap can ever be overplayed :) Then again I'm a sucker for a fantastic engine!

Damn, it's like they're purposely trying not to sell these things. Or they're waiting for the most oblivious sucker out there to get themselves a massive profit. Either way, massive facepalm.

Actually it still has a boxer sound, not as prevalent, but still there. And it's nothing just a catback can't fix.

Turn around, go find that odd pub where all the weird looking people who dress funny hang out and pick up an Alfa 75...
