I'm quite enjoying the idea, dad says it is going to need work soon and we will all go bankrupt and mom is amazed by how much more comfortable that thing is. It has less than 20k miles. What say you Oppo?

*Ahem* Don't worry guys, I'll take this one...
What?

Enjoy. The 5.5 n/a engine is super reliable, it'll eat a couple of O2 sensors every 20k though. Other then that it should have no problems, they're pretty well built beast.

I'd figure back problems and something that has heavy doors, stiff suspension wouldn't help.
Although my experience with armored vehicles is limited to the military, so you have a back problem you get 800mg candy and told to suit up and roll out.

My mother is having back pain and can't drive, she needed something more adjustable and with a comfier suspension. We live in a third world country.

Doors might be a bit heavy but the suspension on those is supposed to be incredibly soft.

I see. And an armored Mercedes is the only option available that can meet that need? Are those more common than regular Mercedes?

She drives an armored Durango, and the most comfortable car they can afford is one of those.

That's great to hear, maintenance is our only worry.

The doors close themselves, kind of.

Hmm, well, I haven't messed with too many Civvie up armored vehicles, beyond Suburbans and military vehicles.
The Suburbans are beasts compared to the regular version.
![]() 02/20/2015 at 23:55 |

I must imagine army Suburbans are B6.
We are only allowed B4 protection

Yeah, but you shouldn't do that.

That. Is. Awesome.
I'm not even gonna pester about the S8. An armored S-Class. It doesn't get much cooler.

Now I have an excuse to go visit them. I AM ANGELA MERKEL.
I might need to wait some time to buy the S8, fixing the Citroens left a hefty scar on my bank account.

The doors have a soft close feature. I don't know how heavy the armor is but I doubt it'll cause an issue. They're pretty hefty motors and I atcually think somebody managed to chop their finger off with one in a Bentley.
![]() 02/21/2015 at 00:14 |

I remember reading about that, not sure it the motors are there, I think the armoring company just got rid of them.

They were Secret Service models, so I'd imagine b10 or something.
8 liter v8 and and overweight suv, 'Murica

Interesting. Just curious, what country are you from? I assumed western Europe from the Citroen, but I guess I'm wrong.

Everything on that list is pretty weak protection. I could get through that stuff just with some stuff lying around in my closet. And, my arsenal really is not that exotic.
![]() 02/21/2015 at 00:33 |

Why would you need all that?
![]() 02/21/2015 at 00:36 |

Exactly my point.

Civilians mainly use B4 protection, the rest is for heads of state/ important people/ the army.

Awesome! Big Benzes are the best, wish someone else in my family cared enough about cars to consider one despite the maintenance costs...
![]() 02/21/2015 at 02:06 |

Huh? I very rarely replace oxygen sensors on these. Unless there's water in the exhaust... Cats are much more common than sensors in my shop.

I can get behind this idea. I assume you're talking about a 220 even though though you have a 221 pictured? 221's started in model year 2007. With the m113 v8? Excellent combination. Easily one of the most reliable S-classes in quite a few years.

He's from Brazil
![]() 02/21/2015 at 02:16 |

No, it is the 221, in Europe it started in model year 2006. I guess this one is a 2006/2007. I'm was told the 5.5 V8 was quite reliable.

Oh ok. It is.
![]() 02/21/2015 at 02:52 |

I could be wrong haha, maybe it is a 2007. You are the expert.

My '10 required them at 6k miles, and again at 13k. '12 at 6k again, 18k, and 28k (this last one included a vehicle software update). Maybe it's just bad luck on my part. Other then that and a small electrical problem caused by a body shop repair, ive had no issues.
![]() 02/21/2015 at 04:51 |
|
Funny enough, one happened to me. 100% a body shop repaired the car wrong from a door ding I got on my first day of ownership. I'm itching on the idea of picking up an 07ish cl550 as a beater car. Yes maintance is expensive but they are pretty bulletproof from a powertrain standpoint.
![]() 02/21/2015 at 08:04 |
|
Powertrains tend to be the least problematic parts of cars these days. Scratch that engines tend to be pretty bulletproof, not so much transmissions. Funnily enough I know a guy who owns and DDs two 1990s Lancias. Both have higher mileages than at least 60% of the cars from that era have done, both still going strong on the original drivetrain. No I don't know how, either. And I can assure you that maintenance on those is cheaper than for a comparable Mercedes.
![]() 02/21/2015 at 10:46 |
|
That's really strange. I've never replaced an oxygen sensor on a 221 come to think of it. It was probably the software that did the trick. A lot of our issues are fixed with software these days.

I've owned and still do own an w221. The transmission is definetly not the weak link on a Mercedes. I know of plenty of Mercedes that go 500k+km on the original drivetrain with only basic maintance. Then again, being originally from Albania, they're everywhere there. That being said I'm sure my s won't be as reliable as an older 90's merc, as technology is hyper advanced in these cars. But I don't believe it'll be unreliable either, and so far they haven't t. I can live with a small repair here and there as long as I get a back massage in traffic. Those make your worries go away.
