So Im really looking into buying this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! but I as Ive looked into it Id probably have to sell the MR2 because apparently I have to pay for a mandated internship this summer which will cost me just about as much as the Acura, therefore sell the MR2 and have most of the money needed. Now I dont need to buy the Acura but I cant DD the MR2 next year like Id need to so therefore Id have to unmodify me 325ci to use instead but buying the Acura would let me keep the 325ci as my track toy. Now I will probably sell my MR2 a some point because a guy I autocross with also has one thats in a bit better shape and he cycles through cars pretty quickly so Id just sell mine to pick up his. BUT the MR2 is the first car that Ive bought solely on my own so Im fairly emotionally attached to it. Ideally Id get the reassurance that the guy with the MR2 wont sell his for another year or two when Im done with the Acura and Id have a buyer lined up for my MR2 at a good price for me but this is the real world so obviously I dont have that luxury. Halp Oppo. Said MR2s (his is red, mines black) and RSX for your time.

Bulleting

Paragraphs.

RSX is a great commuter/daily, but I wouldn't sell an AW11 for one.

Holy crap, that was hard to read. You weren't kidding about a massive wall of text.

Let me see if I understand this.

You have an MR2 and a 325ci, neither of which works as a DD. In order to get a DD, you can either:

A) Keep your existing cars and put the 325ci back to stock.

B) Sell the MR2 in order to pay for the RSX.

Am I following correctly?

WUT? I'm usually good with reading comprehension, but all I get here is "MR-2... internship... 318 track toy.... somebody else... 2 years... acura... help".

I need a daily though.... and I'll have an AW11 after I'm done with the RSX and am making real money

You did well, that's exactly what I'm saying. However by returning the 325ci to stock means no more track toy

Hahaha it's especially hard with 2 MR2s in the scenario. Basically I need a DD which means buying Acura, selling MR2 keeping 325ci track toy. Or keep MR2 and return 325ci to stock.

Yours looks really clean. No rust? I wouldn't want to give that up because who knows if/when another will come around. If push came to shove, I can build another Charlie no problem. If I had a minty one, well... How much you think you'll get for it and whereabouts are you?

Dam dude I kinda in the same situation. My MR2 needs alot of mechanical work that I cant afford and I cant let it sit do to limited space. I'm thinking of selling it or just junking it. Body looks good for PA but it cant rev past 3k RPMs.

Kinja'd!!! SidewaysOnDirt still misses Bowie > RustedSprinter
02/20/2015 at 18:30

Kinja'd!!!0

What's it doing/not doing apart from not revving past 3k? Might be something simple. 4ages are pretty hardy, and if it runs, there's almost no reason apart from major internal damage for it to not run reasonably well.

Oh theres rust, a good bit on each of the rear wheel arches and a good amount of surface rust underneath plus some spots here and there. Its got 207000 miles on it and the drivers seat has hole in the leather but mechanically its solid. The other guys has little if any rust, only ~135000 miles on it and is just as good if not better mechanically. I go to school in Philly and live in upstate NY, ideally Im hoping to walk away with $3500

So from what I'm reading, you have a MR-2 auto-X toy, and a 325ci (E46?) track toy, neither of which makes a realistic daily driver - so you want to by a RSX for DD duty, but need to cycle something through to make room/afford it?

As much as I too would love to, I think it sounds pretty unrealistic to have both a dedicated auto-X toy AND a dedicated track toy...especially at what sounds like a pretty early stage in your life where you're getting through internships?

You certainly do need a DD - so I'd say you either -

- unmodify/spiff up one of the cars to get it ready for DD duty, or

- sell one of the cars so you can afford a DD (not sure why RSX is the only option - you could potentially find something cheaper, especially if it doesn't need to be a long term deal?)

So assuming you go with bullet 2, you'll have to decide which to sell...MR2 or BMW. Sounds like you're more emotionally attached to the MR2, and it's a much rarer car today to find again in a mechanical shape you trust....so sell the BMW (which might mean un-modifying it first)? - and use the MR2 for both auto-X and track duty?

Kinja'd!!!0

Sort of, as of now the MR2 is my "daily" but I dont need to use it everyday and realistically drive a max of 50 miles a week but Im moving next year and that will probably go up 100 miles a week and driving everyday which would not be god to the MR2. Therefore Im looking at the RSX to fill the DD role while still being fun to drive when I get the chance. Plus, when the other guys MR2 (red one) goes up for sale Id sell mine anyway and pick his up

It wont pass 3k in all gear. If I try to force it past 3k it just shudders and sounds like a lower tone of what a car sounds like in forza if you over rev at the beginning of a race. It been sitting for a few years before I bought it. The guy told me it had old fuel in it. I drained that and put new fuel in still the same.

I use mine for all of the above. Daily, track, autocross. Never ever let me down. No parts replaced. Bolt ons, coilovers etc. Its comfy, has most modern conveniences. But the whole never breaking down this is vital. I have zero worries about hopping and down a 1000km journey at any given moment.

Okay, so it pulls strongly to 3k, but then runs into a rev limiter? That's a weird one, but it's definitely not a problem with the engine. That's controlled by the ECU. The ECU in these is really simple and tends to either work or not work. There isn't really any middle ground that I've seen, so it's probably safe to assume that it's receiving an incorrect signal from somewhere else. Download the BGB if you haven't already ( http://manual.teq.org/MR2_AW_1989_RE… ) because it's the best tool for diagnosing problems and go to page 278 of the PDF (FI-98 in the document). I'm going to guess that there's something going on in the TPS. They tend to go bad, and since it works with the entire rest of the EFI system to decide how to send fuel to the engine, a faulty signal there can cause all sorts of weirdness down the line. Test it per the troubleshooting guide. Also, while you're there, check out the fuel cutoff part of the ECU just for shits and giggles. Just because it's not likely to be your ECU, doesn't mean that it isn't and you troubleshoot that bit with the TPS off anyway. Page 308 (FI-128). If it is your TPS, you can get a new one for like $50 from Rockauto (I recommend this one - http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/morein… ).

I'm not in Jersey, but I have some family and friends up that way and I've been helping my Uncle scout out some cool older cars. If I were in the area, I'd probably be poking around under the rear lid with you trying to figure it out. I love saving these things. Yeah, I definitely want to see some pics. I think you should keep it, but I'm biased. The build for Charlie ended up being way more expensive than I was expecting, but none of that had to go into the engine apart from the occasional cheap sensor or seal. The engine fuckups in Charlie weren't even the car's fault. My idiot brother drove it around without the battery tied down, so it spent some time bouncing on the vacuum lines, thermostat housing, and temperature sensors. Luckily he's picked up some mechanical sympathy since then.

Nice rear visor! I don't think that TVIS is your problem. Disabled TVIS just decreases your drivability down low. You'll have less torque below like 3000 or so. The worst it can do is just not work. I'm pretty sure that it's your throttle position sensor. They go bad (hey, it's old) and cause the ECU to do crazy things. It's tied directly to your rev limiter as shown by the diagnostic procedure for it, so it makes sense to me that that's where the problem would most likely be.

Filter - yes if it hasn't been changed. Pump - only if it breaks.

Also, I'm not saying to change the filter because of old gas. It's because chances are that the original 25 year old fuel filter is probably what's still in there.
