M3 failed inspection. Dammit.

I need an inner tie-rod on the left side, and outer on the right side. Already ordered and coming from Kentucky. This would explain the thunking coming from my wheel over harsh bumps.

The third brake light wasn't funtioning, all 7 bulbs were burned out we learned. All replaced.

There's a leaking hose going to the power steering pump, possibly just loose.

And finally the emissions system wasn't ready yet because we reset it recently and it hasn't been driven enough to activate it.

And here I thought we were all good after we got the airbag light off. Damn and blast. Hopefully we fix it all over the weekend, if those tie rods get here quickly, which they should given Kentucky and Missouri aren't exactly far apart.

So, to quell my slight sadness, here's some horrible garage pics of the car. It's so dirty.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Oh yeah, my hood keeps magically gaining more dents. My dad and I think we have a vandal on our hands.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I don't have the light-up key :(

I did learn about all the nifty stuff the on-board computer does with code sequences. Everything from fuel in the tank in liters, to what the current voltage of the battery is. There's also a test cycle for the gauges. Pretty cool stuff.

How long do you have to wait for a reinspection? Sucks you must wait more.

A wise man once said, the best things in life take time. Rome wasn't built in a day. Good things come to those who wait. All will be right in the end.

I'll show myself out now.

Seriously though, just think how much sweeter it will taste you finally get it passed and on the road.

Are you replacing the other tie rod ends while you're at it?

And don't be said - the dealer would cut you a light-up key for ... a mere thousand bucks?

I wish our state had inspections. Get this junk off the road BEFORE the tie rod snaps at 60MPH and the car veers into a school full of special needs children.

My car failed Maryland inspection yesterday, sucks man. I need a new inner tie rod myself, CV boot, control arm bushings, rotors, etc. You buy a used car privately, and then you buy its cost again in parts that you need. I know what you're going through.

We're replacing inner and outers on both sides. Might as well while were in there so they don't fail it in two years during that inspection.

I'm curious as to how much one was, I don't think it'd be $1000, at least it better not be!

That's why I wonder why some people say no having inspections is good. Yeah you might get away with some stuff, but I sure has hell feel safer with NY having inspections. Sure it's a pain in the ass, but the safety factor kinda out weighs that.

I'm kinda glad we do for this very reason. I'd have never known they were bad if the inspector didn't note them. Thus leading to me crashing into a bus of special needs kids.

I agree. I wish we had inspections. I see some terrible cars falling apart rolling down the road. I watched a douche in a donk going about 50 in a 25 hit a bump and saw parts of his lift kit fall out. I see tires with the cords showing in the rain. It's awful

The $1000 was a joke, but not much. Heard a tale on Car Talk once of a Saab dealer that wanted that amount or more when the only key for the car was lost. They had to replace sensors, locks, and few other electronic bits - they couldn't just cut a new key for it. Lucky for the owner, a kind soul found the key on the train tracks and returned it.

They don't cost that much and are prone to leaking when they get old. If you're replacing the line, replace the reservoir.

1997, nearly new Taurus SHO, driving through Arkansas. Either there are no laws, no inspections, or laissez faire inspections - a stakebed dump with no mudflaps on it threw a billiard-ball sized rock into the windshield. Almost ruined my vacation, and could have ruined me had it penetrated the glass. In other states, mudflaps on that sort of vehicle are required.

This is related to the helmet law rule. Sure, if you want to bash your brains out, go ahead - but don't expect my taxes to pay to keep you on a ventilator for 14 years. That's not to say I mind my tax dollars going to help the less fortunate, I just want sensible measures taken to keep people from harming themselves or others.

I was on the highway with my dad when I was about 14/15 years old. A similar situation happened to us. A rock about half the size of a baseball hit the windshield right next to the a pillar. Destroyed the windshield. If it had been a few inches over it may have come through. Sounded like a gunshot.

My destination was Hot Springs Arkansas to visit some friends. I just drove it straight to Resort Ford, where I learned I had a $500 deductible instead of the 250 I'd signed up for. So pissed off. But, my buddy picked me up, and all was well. Until I had to pay.

Wait, why didn't the previous owner of the car get it inspected before you bought it? They legally have to get the safety and emissions inspections done before selling it to you in order to avoid problems like this.

02/19/2015 at 19:55

That was above - I should have known better, but I knew a Ford dealer would have a windshield. I think the total bill was just over $600 ... but the thing was it was a new car with ... 3K on the clock?

How hard was it to replace the spoiler light? Mine are all dead, too, but I've never dug into it.

I might try to fix them if it's not too bad/ pats are cheap and available. I'm just kind of burned out right now.

Kinja'd!!! Logansteno: Bought a VW? > BLCKSTRM
02/19/2015 at 20:23

Kinja'd!!!0

It wasn't too difficult actually. Unscrew two screws holding it in the spoiler, unclip the connector, and then there's 4 screws holding the whole thing together. Take those out and you have access to the bulbs. They just pop in and out.

Kinja'd!!! Big Bubba Ray > Logansteno: Bought a VW?
02/19/2015 at 20:23

Kinja'd!!!0

Dead ass serious. The seller is legally obligated to have both inspections done.

I've gotten into so many arguments with people I've bought cars from because they don't think they are responsible for the inspections. I shoot them the DOR "selling a vehicle" link and it shuts them up pretty quickly! haha

When my brother bought his Volvo back in August, I argued with the owner about him getting inspections done. He didn't think he had to. We made a $100 bet on it and I was right. He wasn't too happy about it.

Unfortunately it might be too late to do anything about it. Possibly call him, show him the site and ask for a bit of cash back? At least ask him to pay for all the inspections because he is legally obligated.

Shit situation. Hopefully you can get the M3 on the road soon.

It's an extremely easy process - Bill Dodge BMW in Maine. Contact Ron Vose rvose@billdodgeautogroup.com. I paid $240 for my E39 diamond key and quoted $180 for my E36 key. You just have to send an email with a copy of the scanned registration. Definitely get a quote. It was a couple hundred off of my local dealers' quotes.
