Hi Folks -

OK, so a couple of nights ago, I posted this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

[OK, so it seems that I use the same salutation over and over, but I digress]

Zippy, Sparkless Ingition, offered this: "Is it really showing 8 secs or or just 1/8 sec? odd issue indeed, unless that's the case."

At first, I replied that it was, in fact, set at 8 seconds because...well...the LCD read 8. Nope, I was completely wrong and Zippy nailed it: It was set at 1/8. Whilst dicking with the camera this evening (technical photography term) I was playing with the adjustment thumb wheel and noticed that the shutter speed kept going down and then started to get larger again until it reached 30. So it went something like 8, 6, 5, 4, 2.5, 2, 1.3, 1, 1.3, 2, 2.5, 4, 5, 6, 8...30 Huh? So I set it to the "other" 8, hit the shutter release, and boom: 8 seconds of exposure, just like that.

So, I'm feeling silly. But this has been educational.

Thanks to all of you that tried to help.

Dont worry, this sort of thing happened a lot when I was getting into photography, always screwed up manual exposures because of this.

I don't know if it's like this for Nikon, but usually if it's a 1/something, it usually just displays the something. If it's more than 1 sec, most cameras have a " next to it (i.e. 1", 2", 4", 8" etc)

I thought about that because I'm now remembering seeing a " next to the numbers, but can't remember all conditions. In the morning, I'll do a check on that. Thanks!

Been there, done that. Many times.

I've taken a big step backwards equipment-wise lately, I'm now shooting with a couple of old and very simple film SLR's. I really love the simplicity and the look of film and I'm having a blast with them.

That said, the slowest shutter speed on them is 1 second and I often need an even longer exposure than that because I do a lot of shooting in dark places. I can't tell you how many times I've put the camera on bulb mode for a 5 second exposure or whatever, then gone to take a shot at a faster speed and clicked the shutter only to find out it was still on bulb mode, wasting an exposure. Not a problem with my Pentax as the bulb setting is on the shutter speed dial, but my Olympus has a separate switch for bulb mode independent of the shutter speed dial- very easy mistake to make.
