The VW is a very "nice" car. It isn't shouty or dull but nice. I don't know if that makes sense but it does to me.

It does. VW owes its market share entirely to modest, artistic styling in a period of CHROME AND FINS shouty overbearing large land yachts. It said "Look, you don't need to aspire to be an investment banker just to have a car that people will smile at."
