I know someone who looked at this car actually, he said the trans was shot. Could move the shifter all the way through the gears with almost no bite. Really sloppy.

Depending on the way in which it isn't running, that 850 could be a great buy. The cam and crank position sensors are prone to die, which causes a no-start condition and often doesn't set any codes. That was how I got a rough-around-the-edges (but very fast) 850R wagon for a very fitting $850 last summer. All it needed was a cam sensor ($15 or so from the local self-service junkyard) and a few other minor fixes here and there, and it's been fairly-reliable transport for a year now. Of course, I didn't know that at the time, but I lucked out.

On the other hand, normally-aspirated 850s aren't terribly exciting cars. The engine's lovely and the automatic transmission is pretty good by '90s four-speed standards, but they're not fast, and they handle just as you'd expect a heavy FWD car to. The turbocharged models have a ton of tuning potential and the R sharpens the handling a bit with sporty suspension, but on the whole, they're pretty staid. On the plus side, though, they don't seem to rust, are great in the snow and cold, eat up highway miles with ease, and have some of the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. Might be worth a look.
