So I found out this morning that my engine and trans alone accounts for 825 of my land cruisers 4850 (stock dry) lard butt lbs. meaning the truck itself is only 4025 lbs.

Kinja'd!!!

Given the fully boxed frame, dual 1 ton solid axles, 3 rows of leathery seats, dual airbags, an extremely strong and heavy body and hardware that doesn't mind a pounding on some rocks...That's pretty amazing. Modern cars...why you so fat? Take a Porsche Panamera for example; between 3900-4500 lbs. A Toyota Sienna is...wait, what?! 4700 lbs?

Kinja'd!!!

for real? dayum.

It's getting better. This Citroen weighs as much as a Fiesta:

Kinja'd!!!

And the new MX-5 only weighs about 100kg more than the lightest NA!

How many airbags, lcd screens, emissions devices, etc. does the 80 have?

Some cars are fighting the good fight, but I'm still blown away that the sienna is weighs more with me in it that my cruiser does without me in it. I mean: unibody an engine and trans that weigh..what...500 lbs total. Those must be some heavy seats or something. Its not like the cruise is a lightweight on construction, its even heavier gauge steel in the body.

Given that a '78 Lincoln Town Car is about 4800lb, FAIL, Toyota.

I heard from somebody at my company (a supplier of lightweight materials to the auto industry) this summer that every gram shaved from a vehicle's design yields something like $1000 in savings from materials transportation costs over the life of a program. I don't know how accurate that is, but it's interesting to think about.

The New one is 1000lbs more than that.

2 airbags, 1 lcd screen (in mine anyway), 2 catalytic converters and a bus sized muffler and resonator. Mine probably weighs 5100 lbs fully dressed with my add ons but cm'on.

the new one weighs 5765, so 900 lbs more or less. the 100 series weighed 5150, mostly because it was much wider.

Now I don't understand why they are so heavy. Which then again, at the same time mine weighed nearly 4k stock, but is about the same length/width of a modern compact car.

I can see how some cars have justifiably gotten heavier (being bigger like you said) but some are just...heavier it seems.

Speaking of new cars, I'm shocked how thin the sheet metal is on my dads new Silverado. I was loading up some garbage into the bed and one item was a fax machine, the plastic phone receiver part fell and hit the sheet metal and DENTED IT? I was like WTF, my dad confirmed that a couple days earlier a shopping cart rolled 2 inches and did the same thing. I get fuel economy but damn that's annoying - would have never happened on the Cruiser.

Safety standards, I'd guess.

Not so much in added devices or mechanisms, but in bodies having to be built up more to hold up in collisions, and then things like thicker doors and pillars, stronger seats, more firewall protection, etc... mean you have to make the vehicle larger overall to maintain the same interior space.

I can see that but from the pictures I've seen of land cruiser that have been wrecked...i have a hard time believing that there are many strength upgrades to the body or chassis, thicker gauge body steel, door pilars, fully boxed heavy gauge frame...man alive.

It's kind of gone in the opposite direction for me—I'm consistently surprised by just how thick the sheet metal is on newer cars, compared to my DD.

I would say you are in the minority. The industry is constantly bragging about how higher strength steel is allowing them to use thinner gauges.

That Citroën is a special case. So far. Sadly.

If I were in the US, you'd be right, but here in Europe I'd say it's true of the majority of cars—old superminis had ridiculously thin sheet metal. I'm pretty sure early examples of my car could occasionally be dented by particularly strong winds.

It's an exception, rather than the rule, to be sure, but I was very pleased to hear about just how light the new MX-5's going to be, and hope that it and the Citroen represent something of a trend.

Also it must be incredibly slow. Of course there is something to be said for towing with a land cruiser instead of the people with small penises who tow a single atv with a diesel quad cab dually.
