Welcome to How Low Will it Go? In this game we will try to predict the low point of a cars depreciation curve. Keep in mind we cannot predict inflation rates, therefore keep all predictions in 2015 dollars. Enjoy and good luck!

Due to recent posts about the first generation M6 I got to thinking how much will deprecation eat into the value? The M cars at BMW used to be the ultimate driving machine. The question still remains if the M6 was an ultimate driving machine with its 500hp 5.0 liter V10 engine? Or was the M6 one of BMW's greatest grand tourers? Regardless of your feelings on the matter the screaming V10 likely was the last NA combustion engine we will see for the M6. Moving forward they will likely be hybrids one day. Currently you can buy an M6 for roughly !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . But I have a feeling the price will drop much lower. The question is how low? You decide in the comments below.

Hint: It may benefit to look at M5 prices. However with 2 doors the M6 may be worth more.

$17,000

Edit: Just looked at auto trader. They're already $14k in Canada, so maybe, free?

I think any reasonably high volume performance cars like this will depreciate to the point where you can find them at pretty much any price depending on the condition. I bet in 10-15 years we'll see beat up examples in the 10s, maybe lower, nice ones in the 30s and then a couple minty ones a fair bit higher. A few years after that, if conditions with electrics/hybrids, gas prices, and legislation are such that it's still easy to own and operate a classic car on the road, there will probably be a collector bump that raises prices across the board. The highest gains will go to the top end of the market, but all examples will rise in price.

I don't think this car is the kind of thing that people get absolutely taken with, but it could very well ride on the coattails of a huge surge in interest in other cars of the era, much like the current trend for older German metal.

NADA says a 2006 with 90,000 miles is worth $26,500. It looks like value decreases by $4k each year and 10,000 miles. I think we'll see values float around $15k for high-mileage examples for a while before they start creeping back up.

But as with every enthusiast vehicle expect to see them list for twice what they're worth by private buyers who wax philosophical about the last NA V10 M6 ever made blah blah blah.

Ouch that is the lowest guess so far. But I don't think you are too far off for a high miler.

Gotta do everything you can to get that extra little bit of cash out of someone.

I can see that. While it might not be the most enticing option. The M6 was kinda at the end of an era and people will remember that going into the future. The cars certainly did not get worse with turbos but the change in character is enough to make some people lament the lose of the NA engine.

That's true. That certainly might contribute to an increase in price once it hits the classic phase that's on the larger side of the field of possibilities.

while 100% spot on, you just ruined the fun of picking an arbitrary number. :)
