We all agree that the U.S. 5-mph bumpers of the 70's were terrible, but take a look at this nastiness that was put on Wranglers sold in Europe:
Vs. the U.S. bumpers:

The bumpers were so ugly that Kinja refused to display them.

Ah, good.
And that european spec bumper is fucking horrible.

Thank goodness nobody actually bought any so I didn't have to see them...

Yikes, they must have some reg that mandates that the wheel well be totally enclosed.

Taking the milk jugs off JKs and TJs instantly makes them look better. 86ing the end caps on my XJ even helped.

That's what I was thinking too, that or some sort of minimum distance between the wheels and the front of the car.

I think a lot of it is for pedestrian safety, so the bumper hits at the right spot on the legs and there's a gap of air before their body contacts the car itself.

lol I actually saw one at Home Depot yesterday. It had a matching red hard top

Did they all have square roll bars like that?
![]() 02/14/2015 at 22:18 |

It's actually plastic cladding on top of the original rollbar. And I don't think they all had it.

I don't think I ever saw a Yj renegade go topless.
The 2 left in my area always have their hard tops on.

Too many Wranglers go their whole lives without being topless. It's saddening.
![]() 02/14/2015 at 22:50 |

not mine. My 97 tj has not seen it's hard top for at least ten years. I went topless at least ten times last summer. Mine just hasn't seen mud in a while.

We don't take the top off for the summer, instead we put it on for the winter. If that makes any sense.

is it a riddle?
Do you mean no top at all in summer? And top up or on all the time in winter.
Sorry no compute!

The extended section out front is awkward (I wonder what purpose it serves?), but I appreciate the solid connection between the bumper and fenders/wheel wells, as one if my biggest gripes with the Wrangler is how anything and everything on the tire will be flung onto and over the bumper cover because of that gap. Maybe it helps with aero, too?
