Any thoughts on the '15 Outback? Parents looking to replace the Corolla since it's pushing 9 years (aren't allowed to own cars older than 10 here). 5 of us in the house plus possibly dog in congested city driving. Will probably be the car I officially learn driving on too. I think it looks great and my dad loves the handling since we had it as a rental in Australia in 2013. Can't really decide between the 2.5 and 3.6 though.

Why aren't you allowed to own cars older than ten years old? That seems a bit silly.

As for the Outback, I don't know much about it, but I know someone who does: m-b-w.kinja.com

My family has the 2.5. It's definitely a good car. Very versatile, not bad on gas (20 mpg in the winter), the Eyesight system works very well, and the CVT isn't even that bad. It does a good job doing its best automatic impression.

It's not fast though... But that's not why people buy an Outback.

here in Singapore there's a fixed tax called the Certificate of Entitlement that you pay upon purchase of a new car with a validity of 10 years. At the end of the 10th year you could either buy a new car or renew the certificate, except that it costs north of US$60,000 which makes it a waste of money. So strictly speaking you can but you wouldn't. The system's in place because the government controls the supply of certificates to prevent congestion and also to ensure less older and therefore less 'green' cars from staying on. Sucks but it's the kind of concessions that have to be made living in a dinky city-state. And thanks for the link! Will check it out.

Drive both, you may not want a 3.6 the 2.5 are quite spirited in their own right.

I work at a Subaru dealership and I do feel the new Subarus are top notch. We bought a 12 outback (brand new) with the 3.6 and it is an amazing vehicle. As for repairs, the 4cyls are in all the time (not new ones yet), but we never see 6cyls in for major repairs. Granted there are a lot fewer 6cyls on the road, but damn that motor makes these cars a space ship.

9.5/10 would buy a 15 Outback 3.6 (-.5 pts for no manual option)

So what happens to all of the cars that are over 10 years old? Does nobody buy them?

they're either sent to scrap or exported to be sold in neighboring countries i.e. Thailand/Indonesia

how's the city mileage? Highway driving here literally doesn't exist

hmm that sounds promising. Yeah my dad isn't in for autocrossing or anything it's just a supremely practical vehicle that drives pretty well for his size. We skidded on a wet road in Australia going 50mph on a hairpin and the car regained control with amazing ease- enough to sell him on the 4WD.

hmm that's interesting. How would you compare the mileage? Where we live highway driving is few and far between so wear & tear/mileage will probably be poorer.

Around 18-20mpg city. The 2.5L is underpowered for a vehicle of that size.

Its slightly better than advertised, though we have a lot of high way driving and a good amount of in town, and she is running like new.
