So I sold the muscle truck today, just didn't have the time to work on it. So now I get to do my favorite thing: Shop for a new car! I still have the FoST but I'm open to selling that too since I don't really need the hatchback and absolute reliability of a new car like I did with my old job. The way I see it I have three options:
1: Buy something older, but reasonable reliable as a second/fun car. Ex: Karmann Ghia, Baja Bug, older BMW. Keep the FoST as a reliable daily driver.
2:Buy something oldish, but somewhat impractical as a second/fun car. Ex: 1st Gen Boxter, Z3, S2000, Miata. Convertibles mainly. Keep the FoST as a reliable and practical daily driver.
3:Buy an E39 or E46 as my primary driver. Sell the FoST and buy one of the options above, or maybe a cheap work truck.
But that begs the question, how do I feel about some of these cars? I'd love to have an E46 M3, but most of the ones that are reasonably priced around here are convertibles. Like this one:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Now I'm not going to going to the track nearly as much as I was now that I'm in Houston so a convertible could be kinda nice, but something about a convertible M3 just feels... wrong.
I also don't really know how I should feel about the Boxter, prices are cheap cheap cheap now, and they're supposed to be fun to drive but... they're not that fast, I don't think they look that good, and they give off a sorta poser feel. I dunno. What are the maintenance and reliability like on Boxters? This one is close by and the price is right.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Then I'm also looking at old aircooled stuff, which would be new to me, like this Ghia
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Or this Baja Bug
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And then I really like this 540i, really low miles. Could make a great DD
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
But this S2000 also looks good
Ghaaa so many choices!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Perhaps baja Ghia is the answer, once I saw one I never wanted a baja beetle again.

I beilive each will be very enjoyable, albeit in their own way.
The thing with the Ghia though is that its sloooooow, so I recommend it for cruising and pimping only.

Yeah, since I moved to Houston I don't have access to a private racetrack anymore :( so it's not as big of a deal. A cruiser is fine with me right now.

How about an s2000 as a reliable daily driver / daily hoonmobile and then using what's left for the first part of option 1?

I've got a dog, so I need something somewhat practical to transport her around in.

get the e46 M3 vert. Prices are lower because they are less desirable.

Right, but just how much worse than a M3 Coupe are they? Winter doesn't really exist per say where I am and I won't be tracking it much so torsional stiffness isn't a massive concern. Normally I find 3-series based verts to not look that good but the E46 M3 Vert is growing on me

they're not as great as coupes, but only marginally so if you aren't going to be tracking it. It'll still be an M3, tons of fun. And with the top down, the sound is just even better. You'll have no problem finding a clean vert for around $15k.

Maybe keep the FoST and go for option 1? Or you could sell the FoST and find a cheap WRX hatch? Or something super crazy would be to get a cheap daily driver like an e39 530i and hunt for an NSX. I'm not sure what your budget is though so that last one might not work.

Having owned 2 986s and currently driving an e39, i'd say it depends. The boxster is a car you can drive the shit out of, every day. I had a non-S and I think the car is just powerful enough to be able to flog it daily - it will take highway flyovers (I see houston in your CL posts) at high speeds and you can gun it on onramps. I have a 550i currently and it doesn't do corners as well, and the power is enough to get you into trouble. The exterior of the 986 is meh, the interior is shit (albeit functional,) but once you get in you forget all that and its a joy. I wrecked my original or I'd still have it, my wife ok'd buying another one when we have the money. All that being said - 1st boxster went 3 years (60k - 85k mi I believe) with oil changes and one water pump. The 2nd one lived in the shop for most of 6 months before I took a huge loss and just sold the fucker. I've told people if I wanted a similar car i'd get the s2000 next time but I'm not sure that is entirely true...
That said, the 540 i have now is the perfect DD. Good enough power and handling for the street, great practicality for transporting people/cargo/dogs/drugs (I do have a wagon but a sedan is great too)

I'd be hesitant to own a low cost 100k+ mile M3. Same with that particular Boxster. Just realize that asking price is the entry cost.
If you're going the Boxster route, save up and get a Boxster S. Had I done that originally, I most likely never would have sold it and bought a 996. Do it now while you can still somewhat regularly find well maintained garage queens with under 60k miles for under $15k.
Another car to consider in this category is a used non-M BMW Z4. They've got a probably not deserved reputation for being reliable (by BMW standards), have depreciated quite a bit, and share a lot of the mechanical parts with the E46 which helps keeps costs down.

Option #2 and get the Z3. Honestly if I was looking for a small convertible that'd be the way I'd go. I know Miata is the answer around these parts but that Z3 has power from factory so it's decently quick and repairs are also cheap on it.

I'm TRYING to. Scheduled to test drive the Ghia and the M3 tomorrow, trying to get Baja guy to get back to me. Found a dealership with 4 low mileage S2000s that I might swing by, I'm not sitting still.

I've seen that one, it looks good but I'm looking for more of a budget classic, If I'm spending 10+k I want it to be a modern car

What the fuck I don't even.. I've got no qualms with doing heinous shit to funky old school stuff, provided it's not something that should be kept bone stock for rarity's sake, but that crosses the line. That's terribad. Fantastic ground clearance nonetheless. Gah I need a drink.

Let me know what you end up with! I'm Also in Houston and sometimes head up to a place in the woodlands/magnolia where an owner of land lets us use his land for some fun auto crossing.

yeah. I haven't been able to go recently due to military but once you get to know the owner he pretty much lets you go out there whenever as long as you don't end up dead or do something super crazy.
