'98 Volvo V70 XC (sans XC bits). Driving on the highway tonight around 60mph, upshift light and shift mode buttons started flashing with no specific degradation in driving performance. Got off the highway, car would take off as normal from a stop. Pulled the code, P0740 (Torque Converter Solenoid Open).

Initial thought was PNP switch on its way out, but I have reverse lights and the car didn't exhibit any sluggishness from takeoff. Any ideas as to what's gone awry?

Spirited driving? Shifted fine? Everything seems good? Get a few operating cycles through it and see if the code clears itself. Apparently P0740 can be caused by a discrepancy between actual speed and reported speed.

Also check to see if you have a good fluid level/quality. The TC solenoid is finicky it seems

Quantity is good, quality is suspect. It's also BALLS cold out tonight, so maybe the fluid isn't as viscous as it should be. Mrs. L and I were headed up to the mountains to check out an ice castles exhibit and about 10 miles out of town, this happened and we 86'd our plans for the night.

ABS module?

Nothing indicative of the ABS module giving up the ghost. Just the P0740, flashing upshift light and flashing shift mode switches. CEL is also on for an O2 sensor (just learned this tonight) and the ever-present P0442 for the evap hose that lives beneath the rear suspension.

Those valve bodies are fairly famous for solenoid problems, but the fact that it was really cold out and it otherwise has no other symptoms leads me to agree with Nibmoe for the time being. These are also fairly sensitive to fluid quality, but that alone would not cause an open circuit fault. Continue to drive it carefully, and see if you can discern if the TC is locking up properly a speed or not. If it sees a transmission input speed not equal to engine RPM when it should be in lockup, it will throw this code.

I had to replace my solenoids for this issue. If you take them out you can tell by how freely the they move if its the solenoids causing the issue. They usually get worse as the car warms up and if you were driving in mountains your fluid was hot despite outside temps.
