I was wondering what it was about - it wasn't obvious from the manif.

Looking at the video - OK les premieres deux minutes - it seems quite reasonable if what they say about premature deaths due to carcinogenic particules fines is correct. Air quality in Paris isn't the best at the best of times and they have to be seen to do something.

Can you explain?

It's a demo against a plan to reduce pollution in Paris by progressively banning older vehicles - first trucks and buses and then cars - and bikes registered before 2000. Bikers are up in arms because they say pollution is mainly due to other sources and there aren't any diesel bikes so they don't see why a ban should apply to older bikes.

The ban is accompanied by various measures to encourage pedal and electric bikes and public transport.

Paris has experienced high levels of allegedly carcinogenic microparticles in recent times due at least in part to government encouragement of diesels.

Similar plans are afoot for London.

Thanks. I'm not entirely sure where I stand on this, because pollution is definitely a serious problem. In the next generation, I think some very difficult decisions will have to be made.
