"Kake Bake" (kakebake)

My parents' computer (Windows 7 I think) has picked up some tenacious malware and I'm hoping anyone versed in the subject can recommend any reputable free software to deal with it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Nuke it from orbit.
No, really. Just backup whatever important files you can, and blast away the current install. Format it and reinstall.
Never put faith into a computer that's already been compromised.

the question is: what do you need? antivirus? anti spyware?
Did you try Avast? it's free and is good.
bw, nice GT6 pic!

I don't know. It keeps installing a bunch of updates—that's what I know about it.
I'll try that, though. Thanks.

That's what I was thinking.
I'll try to suggest it. Thanks.

Ha, that'd be the ideal, yes.

Back up important stuff and install Ubuntu. Did it for my dad and he loves it. It's free as well and way lighter than that pig of an OS so their machine will run a lot smoother.

Install malware bytes and run it in Safe Mode . Be sure to update the app to the newest definitions and restart the pc while pressing F8 multiple times. Run the antivirus in this mode too.
Tell your dad to lay off the porn.

There's no need at all. It's really not hard to remove malware.

That was my first inclination.
I'll look into it. Thanks.

Try Malwarebytes, maybe. But you can't beat firing up Process Monitor ( https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinter… ), terminating the malware processes, then deleting the relevant files from wherever they were.

It's what I've always used. All of Piriform's products are great although it looks like malwarebytes has spun off as its own deal now.

You're never 100% sure you've removed all of it. If you think otherwise, you're wrong. Not every AV suite will find 100% of the infections 100% of the time.
Even worse if it's a kernel vuln that was used. You're far too blase about the current state of malware and the current shit state of AV.

Avoid avast. Every machine I've seen it on it was the cause of more problems than it solved, and it has some obnoxious fucking female voice talk out of your speakers every time it does something and I can't figure out how to ignore it.
If it's something minor, boot into safe mode, use msconfig to disable any non-Microsoft services you don't immediately recognize, as well as stuff from the startup category. Reboot, install Malwarebytes Anti Malware, CCleaner, and Microsoft Security Essentials. Run MSSE, Malwarebytes, and then CCleaner. You'll probably have to reboot a few times.
This is the method I went through to remove an obnoxiously tenacious adware virus from a friend's PC without reinstalling. If you still have stuff happening after this like home pages or search engines mysteriously changing on web browsers just back up files, reinstall windows.

Almost all malware can and will be removed by a decent combo of AV and AM software. But I actually meant doing it manually. It really isn't difficult to work out what should be there and what shouldn't.
I used to do AV professionally, and I never encountered a proper rootkit* in the wild, for what that's worth. Rootkit Revealer's pretty good, though.
*I see that people have been using 'rootkit' for much easier-to-detect trojans, lately. Those, I've seen. But they're trivially easy to get rid of. Proper rootkits are very rare.

Windows Defender Offline, boot from disc, see what magic happens. You can also boot from USB for it. Also, TDSS Killer from Kaspersky, and ComboFix Should be able to get you back in business.
