In a conversation earlier today Übel !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of his Mk. IV GTI with a full set of tires in the trunk with the seats up. This got me wondering if my Mk. VII could do the same. Answer: nope, not quite.

I can fit 4 side by side easily, I think, and can close the hatch, barely, but it isn't happy about it. They'd push on the latch as is, if the tires were mounted and inflated I wouldn't have been able to close it.

This is probably due to a shift to increase passenger space but still, boo and hiss VW, boo and hiss.

Mind you, with the seats folded I could probably fit 2 full sets pretty easily, so I won't complain too much.

The MK7 is only about 3 inches longer than the MK4 (per Wikipedia), and that could easily be accounted for in bumpers let alone increased passenger volume, so I'd say its not really that surprising. There's only so much you can do with a set amount of space.

Looking up some more detailed specs it looks like the increase in size is mostly at the benefit of interior space. The Mk. VII has 8 cubic ft of interior space over the Mk. IV. 2 in. of additional rear legroom make up most of the 3 in. of length difference. The new car is the nearly the same height but 2 inches wider, which will also help passenger and cargo space.
