And by none other than Walter Röhrl, the famous German rally and auto racing driver. Displacement sizes of the new motors and bhp figures included.(Photo by Porsche)[ Reposted for morning crowd ]

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Walter Röhrl is saying the new turbo flat-six motors will produce 349bhp from a 2.7L and 430bhp from a 3.0L motor for the Carrera and Carrera S respectively. No torque figures yet, but the forums are talking about it nonstop around the clock now. These power figures are much more realistic compared to the crazy 500+ numbers we saw last year. I have to wonder as well, how much weight these new engines will add or lose.

It's also reported he's driven the new engines, and is not a fan. He's also quoted saying:

'We need to go to turbocharging to reduce emissions,' he is quoted as saying. 'How else can we get C02 levels below 95g? But no matter how good a turbo engine is, it can never have the pure response of a naturally aspirated engine.'

He also says:

'At least it's not a four-cylinder turbo like in the next Boxster. That sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle, I'm not kidding you! I tell the guys, "You're joking with this sound, right?" But they just say they are working on it. I'm sure they will get it right.'

I hate how everyone compared the 488 GTB to the F40 when it's clearly the successor to the 288 GTO(thank you, GTRZILLAR32), I'm not one for comparing the new cars to the old ones in such a way, but 2.7 and 3.0? The last 911s to have these size engines were the 1974-77 911s and the 911SC respectively....

Kinja'd!!!

Shit, why do I get the feeling history is going to repeat itself? My dad buys an '74 911 2.7L new in 1975, I guess there's a 991.2 2.7L Carrera in my future?? I'm remaining hopeful that these new cars don't disappoint, in driveability and sound. I wonder how they'll stack up to the current brilliant N/A engines.

We need to plant more trees...

I like my Porsche flat-6s naturally aspirated unless the alphanumerics 'GT2' are involved.

Have you not seen what they've been doing with the Macan? The Macan S and Macan Turbo are both turbocharged, the 911 will retain the same naming it's always had, the Turbo will still be the "Turbo", in name.

Did we not have a discussion about this yesterday? Now do you understand my being worried of these smaller motors with turbos? I'm remaining hopeful as much as I can, but I'm still very worried for the outcome.

I'm gonna have to find a 991 or 997 and acquire it hopefully in the next two years somehow.

I'll agree with you on cars that have a history of being N/A (911s, M3s, Astons, V12 Lambos, etc) but with a newer car like the R8 I'd like to see something different and innovative so that I can safely call it a unique car and not just a rehashed Gallardo.

I prefer the 997s just because the 991 looks massive compared to it. Plus the early GT3s look so bloody awesome.

And the worst part is that there's apparently no better solution than turbocharging. There just some brands and cars that shouldn't have to be affected by emissions and fuel economy. This is one of them! The Carrera's are already a certified low emissions vehicle for crying out loud!!

I'm gonna get one of those cars(997/991), manual or PDK in the next year or two, I don't care how, I'm gonna do it regardless of the repercussions because god dammit I need one NOW before values go up, and they will.

Thats why I jumped on the M3. I see what happened to the values of the E30 and I think it will happen to the E46 as well , it will just happen slower because many more were produced.

Like I don't care what potential debt this could put me in as a college student, and I don't care if it's the last car I ever have. This just has to happen for the sake of the future. Hell, I'll take a 996 if need be, I refuse to miss out on this now.

I'll even take a damn Cayman.

when I first heard that I hoped dearly it wouldn't transfer over to the 911.

Random thought, I wonder how they're going to make it hard to then this engine. They have to make it hard to make up the performance (power/tq wise) difference between this and the real turbo (besides AWD)

I think given recent Porsche history the turbo C2 will drive and sound meh and the turbo C2S will drive and sound pretty good

Porsche really increased the gap between the C2 and C2S with the 991. The larger gap started out with the 997.2 and ballooned with the 991

The C2 and C2S sound exactly the same...What history are you speaking?

I meant performance for the recent history

And since Porsche keeps widening the gap I wouldn't be surprised if they put more effort into making the C2S sound good than they did the C2

I like the old days when every 911 was a good 911 and a Carrera S or higher were just extra good 911s

Now I feel like the Carrera S is really the starter 911 and the Carrera is more of an Eco mobile than anything else. The 991 is too big to have ~ 350 HP :/ Anytime I drive the 991 in the family it makes me kind of sad. It is so meh for how much my dad paid for it

The base Carrera is more than adequate as a sports car and can more than make up the power difference with a good driver. Horsepower doesn't win all the races. Hell, the 997 Carrera is great, and it weighs MORE than a 991.

You really think Porsche is going to slack off on the Carrera because it's cheaper and the base model?? News flash, the base model is the Cayman/Boxster. You think that Porsche is going to make one sound better than the other, now that's some shit.

Slow cars are more fun going fast than fast cars going fast. What, 3 seconds and you're at the speed limit or getting pulled over, hell nah.

And how dare you call it an "Eco mobile"......Of hell da fuck nah you didn't just say that. NOPE, NO NOPE NO NO NO NEIN NEVER NO NOT EVER SAY THAT AGAIN.

I know that it weighs less than the 997. And I know that its adequate. I reviewed all the specs and I know that the base 991 puts down better lap times than the Cayman S.

The reason I called it an eco-Mobile is because of how it feels. The base 991 may be faster than a base 997.2 or a 981 Cayman S but it doesn't *feel* faster.

It feels slower than the 997.2 C2 because peak torque hits so much higher in the rev range, a change they made to score higher in MPG tests because MPG tests are not done while driving hard (similar to how turbos help with these MPG scores). And it feels slower than the 981 Cayman S because the car is bigger and heavier.

I agree with you that specs aren't everything. A slow car that feels fast is awesome. And that's the problem. To me the base 991 is a fast car that feels slow.

Those are just my opinions. I'm glad the base C2 is going turbo cause it will have so much more torque. I still wish the 991.2 C2S would have a 4L NA H6 but we can't all get what we wish.

Bed time for me now. Hopefully I'll dream of 991.2 GT3 RSs

I'm still slightly disappointed that Audi didn't stick a V8 turbodiesel into the R8. Would have made a nice connection with the TDi Le Mans cars, would have furthered the 'genuinely usable supercar' image and possibly started it's own little niche.

You can complain about TD power delivery not being sporty enough, but I've been in a couple of remapped diesels and they can be made to rev nicely and cleanly to the redline.

Something tells me these new turbo base models aren't going to be the same riot in the rain that their NA base 911s have been. The base carrera is a freaking scalpel in 2nd gear in tight, slippery corners. A 911 on winter tires in a snowstorm? There is nothing, and I mean nothing, like it. I really hope they don't screw this up in Zuffenhausen.
