Since Brown Dog shared his road trip map I figured I'd post mine as well. My friend and I are driving out to Oregon Trail Rally in April and we've decided to take the scenic route. Planning on taking about ten days each way and hitting some national parks and other sights during the trip. Can't wait!

As a bonus, this will be the ultimate test of the XT. Not only in terms of it handling that many miles without any problems (which it should be able to do), but cargo space, comfort, etc. We'll basically be living in it for close to a month.

Sort of, it had the CEL light up on the way to Sno*Drift, which turned out to be a bad coil pack, but I consider that relatively minor.

Having been there it's definitely worth that extra day on the road. It is amazingly beautiful. If you can add it, do it. You will not regret that.

We were originally starting and ending in Austin and planned to hit Moab/Arches on the way back. Still hitting a few exciting things in Utah though (which I can't mention here because most of them are surprises and every now and then she lurks in Oppo).

That's kinda similar to what we did a couple years ago.

This was around 24 days I think. Over 6,000 miles.

You have to do the Beartooth hwy near my dads hometown in Montana, just google the images. Not far from your route line.

If it's open we will. Because the road is currently closed Google won't let me use it for the route. Same thing on the other side of Yellowstone. Planning on coming in on 287 then up 89 to Mammoth, but those roads are closed so I can't pick them.

i would strongly recommend getting off the freeway between Madison and Minneapolis. Lots of great roads around there

Without a doubt the best rally I've done in terms of scenery, and the roads are among the best as well. Can't wait to run it again.

Maybe. That's the last day of the trip so there's no telling what our mental state will be at that point.

EDIT: But hey, I'm only about 60-90 minutes east of Albany, so if we can't do a meet up then having it some other time won't be hard.

Last I ran it was the first year they moved out to Mt. Hood. Have they gone back to the Vernonia & Trask stages? I know Vernonia got hit hard in the floods awhile back but haven't been up or heard anything since. I miss getting breakfast in the little greasy spoon in Vernonia, with service at the school. Nicest service park I've ever been in.

Still out by Mt Hood. Day 2 is based in Dufur and day 3 is in Hood River. The Hood River service park is literally at the waterfront where the Hood meets the Columbia, so it's not too shabby. Veronina was before my time, so sadly I know nothing about those stages.

I've done almost half of those roads, some of those are absolutely amazing. When you get to the black hills I recommend taking the scenic route (16a?) through a little town called Keystone(?). Should be a lot of fun!
