Show someone a picture of the Citroen DS, then ask them when they think it was made. This particular DS was built in 1974. I find it incredible that this car is 41 years old and it still looks new.
So, what car do you think aged well?
![]() 02/11/2015 at 19:05 |

easy answer : C2 (63-67) Corvettes

Personally I don't see how this looks "new". It certainly doesn't look dated or old in anyway, but to be confused for a brand new 2015 model year?
![]() 02/11/2015 at 19:10 |

I didn't mean that exactly. What I meant was that it doesn't look like it's 41 years old, which makes sense because the car was groundbreaking when it was built.

Still looks timeless, and given that the most outdated thing on them design-wise is the 4-bolt rims (let's ignore the non crossflow engine) I'd say they've held up technologically too.

I think this generation Lexus LS has aged rather gracefully. Very clean lines. Nothing vulgar or too ostentatious. (I happen to be a fan of the current Lexus lineup, but will freely admit it is polarizing to say the least.)
![]() 02/11/2015 at 19:13 |

It's just so stately. I'd do one up.
![]() 02/11/2015 at 19:14 |

I know. Drop it just a little with some slightly larger wheels and thinner tires and it would look fab.

meh, they are loud and pretty but nothing that any other period muscle car couldn't give you.

And turbo the crap out of it.

I think the B5 A4 has aged nicely, as has that generation A8.
man, I never realize how much those cars look alike until just now.

A muscle car won't give you the feeling of being a light fiberglass coupe with irs.

I've been in a C2, and i can tell you that the people who own them only rev past 2000 when they are safely parked at a car show, other than that its just burble burble bling.

I'd say most Audis from 1982 onward qualify. They've always been about clean, unfussy styling and gradual evolution from model to model, which has really helped them all age quite gracefully.

It's been out for over a decade yet still looks absolutely amazing..
![]() 02/11/2015 at 19:26 |

I agree completely. I love the look of the A7, but I wonder if it will look as dated and silly in a few years as the original CLS looks now.
![]() 02/11/2015 at 19:29 |

Perhaps. Given how un-sporty those are, I don't think massive power really suits them. These are much more about gliding effortlessly along the highway than huge grins while passing plebes in the slow-lane.

Of course they do, the first pic is an Audi size small, the second is size large. Those silly letternumbers are just sizes auf Deutsche.

Don't blame the Corvette itself for the old men who own them and dump tons of money into them.
Truthfully, pretty much all cars from the 60s won't give you anything else that a period muscle car won't give you. Suspensions were underdampened, you didn't have enough rear roll rate, and you slide around in the seats. Even light weight sports cars from that era drive like that.
That being said, I'd still take the Corvette over many other 60s sports cars due to the parts availablity, documentation and good motors.

I remember the rides in my grandpas 67 427, it was the best feeling ever. My 68 Camaro doesn't come close to the experience. It's entirely different

Mustangs are an interesting car to drive.
Their front suspension is funny. It's not stiff, but because the shock tower is body mounted, it does transmit a good bit of harshness to the ride. Harsher than it needs to be, but doesn't accomplish much because it isn't stiff. It's like ford tried to make it feel sporty rather than actually be sporty.
The 66 Mustang I remember from when I was really little would always creak and groan and make a bunch of racket doing things that my dad's 442 would do effortlessly.

I drove a 65 with the i6 and 3 speed a lot one summer...they are genuinely horrid cars to drive...and im comparing that to the 38 Plymouth I also drove that summer.
![]() 02/11/2015 at 19:41 |

Yeah, people only really bought them back in the day because they were cheap and they liked the way they looked. They didn't give a shit how they drove.
I've always kind of viewed the original mustang as chick car / secretary car.

This same basic styling language is what makes me love this, the E38, the W126, and of course, my car. Long, semi-square car that looks almost like a sculpted plank of wood. Simple, classy, and even ever so slightly sporty.

Makes sense that this thing was like something from the future back then. now that we are in the future looks almost normal...

R230 (2002-08) for what is as near as makes no difference a 15 year old design, most would be hard pressed to tell a new one from this car.

Not only that, but it shares a lot of the tech with the new ones too.

the Mazda twins:
I firmly believe that you could put the FD RX-7 on sale today, and it wouldn't look dated. This is especially true after the face lift.
The NA Miata looks very sharp today. The designers did what the 90s were good at, which was clean, uncluttered lines. This vehicle styled just right.

I love all of those. I drove an old 93 merc recently (w140) and people looked at me on the street as if I was some important executive. Real elegance doesn't get old.

I love the W140 as well. There's an S500 that goes to my school, which I end up next to on occasion. Very imposing cars.

Mercedes w201. A 190e in good condition looks just as elegant as it did back in the day.

The B5 A4 looks exactly like what a ten year old would draw if you asked them to draw a car.

While I feel that the NB Miata more closely resembles the FD3S styling and thus is more aesthetically pleasing, those are both - especially in the FD3S' case - great choices.

As far as not duplicating anyone else's answer, I'll go with the BMW Z4:
Not bad for a 12+ year old design. Of course, most roadsters should age gracefully as there isn't as much to date them. On the other hand, the original SLK has not aged gracefully:
Any car with hard lines tends to date itself, and this is especially true for the SLK as it came right at the end of the hard line automotive trend.

Yeah, uhh, I think the color ruins it too.

Was never a big fan of the modern Vantage styling. But you are right, that basic style has stuck around for over 10 years and it still looks amazing.

2008 - 9 Audi s6
New enough to have escaped the bar of soap era, but old enough not to HUUURRR ANGRY HEADLIGHTS
A very professional, sharp looking car to this day
(plus dat v10)
My dad had one, but he sold it. Even though the 7 series he has now is a full second or so faster to 60, the s6 felt faster because of throttle response and no turbo lag.

I intentionally picked the turquoise because it screamed "sounded like a good idea in the 90's", but even the red/black/silver ones look dated. Just compare it to a contemporary Boxster in the same color - while still a questionable color, the curves just make it hold up better.
![]() 02/12/2015 at 01:03 |
|
That Boxster is downright attractive. I'd get one of those over a new Boxster.

The Mazda RX7 FD is the most timeless car I can think of. It's something that would still sell if it was sold brand new today. The curves on this thing are just perfect. Maybe not the best Japanese car ever made but definitely the prettiest Japanese car ever made.

I'm planning on buying an old merc at some point, I did my research and 87-93 190e is the best choice, completely bulletproof. I found a 92, one owner, really nice at $13.000 (cars are expensive here) but I'm planning on buying malybe later this year, hopefully I can find something closer to 10k...
