I got yelled at for flying my drone in a state park today, but the ranger let this dude fly his sweet RC plane.

Because RC ski-plane. You should get one, I feel like it's the logical next step for you anyhow - let's see some first person barrel rolls.

How are these different again!?

what a dick

Understandable; that's much cooler than a quadcopter.

One is easier to control and flies at a lower speed, where the other is much larger, more likely to crash, and is capable of causing damage if it does.

It's like snowboarding vs. skiing. You're both doing the same thing but in different ways. The thing about drones is that there is a stigma about spying on people associated with them. If drones are outlawed, only outlaws (and the government) will have drones!

very true, I'll post some vids him him flying in a bit, he was a pro

So you're saying the RC plane poses more of a "public menace" than the drone does?
And yet we're told we can't have 'drones'...
I hate people.

What did they tell you?

The guy was really cool, but has strong feelings about quads, especially FPV. He thinks FPV is cool, but thinks it makes regular people way more likely to do dumb things like fly far out of eye sight over people and property.
He saw me flying before I got yelled it though, and said "you don't seem like an idiot" so I took that as a compliment.

She had a whole sheet full of information she was supposed to collect from me, to be relayed to the NYPD and the FBI. But she didn't. She also bristled when I asked for a copy of the sheet, or to take a pic of it. I stopped asking questions then.

You are an actual terrorist, after all.
just stop plotting against the state

Not sure which your referring to. His plane was bigger than my Phantom, and also definitely moving at higher speeds than I generally fly my Phantom. Granted, my quad may be a bit heavier, but both his plane and my quad had exposed rotors so I think they both pose the same amount of danger if crashed.

The whole idea is that the law is actually backwards. Drones are safer than RC planes.

This is definitely true. I somewhat understand the anxiety after seeing people like the idiot on Fox & Friends who crashed one on live TV while talking about "drone safety". But still, I was in a huge open area with no one else other than this plane guy around.

That's what I was saying. The ranger is thinking "Drone!" "Danger!", without any thought as to why that's not true.

Told me flying a quadcopter is prohibited in the park, and that they're supposed to take a whole bunch of info about what I was doing and why and with what, but she didn't take any of the info from me.

Yes absolutely. I agree.

I can understand a seasoned RC pilot being wary of the proliferation of drones. You should keep a copy of your blizzard footage on your phone so you can whip it out when confronted with a doubter. "See, I'm not just some random jamoke."

haha BUT I AM!

Don't hate people, hate the government that can't figure out how to regulate them so we won't spy on each other while preserving their right to use them to spy on people.

The Government is still a herd of 'people'. Sometimes I do wonder about their humanity though...
![]() 02/11/2015 at 18:44 |

But drones are new, and anything new is a possible terrorist weapon and therefore must be outlawed.
The Government will see us return to the middle ages or die trying. I swear these idiots are aren't anything more than hysterical, shrieking, Pavlovian money-followers.
They'd rather die than have an opinion unless there is enough money involved.
Not that I'm bitter and jaded or anything...

Wow even in a park? I'm surprised, I'm also surprised they found you since they aren't very easy to notice. Glad you didn't get too fucked with.

You could get a more conventional RC helicopter to carry your camera. It should actually be easier to make one of those autonomous

They close a bunch of the roads in the park I was in during the winter so the rangers have a lot less to patrol.

If I had the money I could add the tech to have my quad follow me around and fly pre-programmed routes, but I don't think it's worth it with this model. 'm planning to upgrade to something bigger and capable of carrying a camera better than a gopro sometime this spring/summer.

It wouldn't be too expensive depending on how much you did yourself. If you got an ardupilot and made the phantom autonomous, you should be able to do that to any helicopter
